@mrstilly: Oh, that;s really nice. We don't have any smooth bike paths near us. I forgot how awesome those are!

@pastemoo: I don't run on the road with the jogger. The park has a 2.5 mile paved bike trail and there is another paved trail near my in laws.

@lydg: I love my summit. It's incredibly smooth and we use it all the time. It's our only stroller now.

@mrstilly do you like your summit? I got the baby jogger FIT and can't wait to take the baby out in it, but I have no idea how long it will be (I'm due in 2 weeks)

@mrstilly: Like I said, I didn't really think through it.
The liability thing makes a lot of sense (look at the bumbo!)
Where do you run with nice flat surfaces? Our roads are very bumpy. :(
@Mrs. Sunglasses: Yay! Good luck. :)
@Ms. Fairy Wings: Wow. That would be cool.

I jog with my LO and have since he was about 2 months old. I have a special insert that I used until he was around 5 months. I have a doctor friend and she used a car seat insert that attached on top of her jogging stroller - it was pretty cool because she could look at and talk to her baby the whole time.

@pastemoo: September is when all the activities start up again. So I'm doing some cardio stroller/swimming with Sienna, swimming with Mavrick, Zumba and starting up my C25K for the record. I'm not a runner. Haha

Also, I don't think that jogging with a baby in a carrier is safe at all. That would be much more jarring to their little bodies than running with them in a jogger. Every step would jar them. I've never seen or heard of someone running with a baby/child in a carrier.

DS is 16 months old and I've been jogging with him in our Baby Jogger Summit XC jogging stroller since he was 11 weeks old.

Typically strollers/manufacturers advise not to run with an child under 12 months, though I've seen 6 months and 9 months out there too. I've also seen warnings not to run with an infant seat on the stroller, I think because it makes it top heavy so a bump or turn could potentially make the stroller topple over.

The reason that the age cutoff is so high is because of liability issues. Not all babies develop strength and head control at the same time, especially premies, so the companies want to cover themselves from lawsuits.

We never used an infant seat, but I think if I were going slow on flat, paved, very smooth surfaces, I would be okay doing it. The infant seat gives much more support that the stroller itself does.

DS was born 10lbs9oz and could lift his head for a few seconds at a time when he was born. He had great head and neck control by 10-11 weeks, so at our 12 week apt I asked the pediatrician. He evaluated DS's head control, and gave the okay for flat, paved, smooth surfaces. (Really nice sidewalk or a paved path - no bumps).

I think most babies have good enough head control by 4ish months, so it's always good to ask your pediatrician. Just start slow. Also you can ask your pediatrician about head supports for the jogger too. The after market products like the snuzzler are not safe for carseat use, but they are great to add support in a stroller. We just took the head support that came with his infant seat and used it in the jogger for the first few weeks I was running with him.

@LivsMama: Interesting. I wonder if the 6-8 month jogging strollers are more expensive.

I jogged with her in the jogging stroller since she was like 8 weeks. But I had an attachment that you could put in the infant carseat. She didn't start using the jogging stroller without the infant carseat until she was about 8 or 9 months old.
I have no idea how you'd jog with her on your back, that seems like it would take some coordination and might be a little hard on your body.

We got clearance from our pediatrician for LO to jog with us at 7 months. According to our jogger manual...the seat needs to be in an upright position so the baby needs to have strong head and neck control.

Liv is 13 months and I woudlnt jog with her on my back. Her head conrol is obviously developed, but that would be way too bumpy and uncomfortable for her, not to mention the jarring back and forth. My doctor told me 6-9 months, depending on the neck strength. He gave me the go ahead at 6.5 or 7 months to jog on smooth terrain - nothing rough, no bumps, with the seat at a recline if it could recline at all. Certain strollers have better shock systems, so some are 12 months and some are 6-8, etc

This is a spinoff from the stroller thread. Do you jog with your baby? I always assumed that I would. Then I wasn't allowed to run until 10 weeks pp (and at 12 weeks I'm not really up for a real jog yet--bummer!)

And then I read the small print on a jogger I saw at Babies R Us: "not for use with infants under 12 months" and even then "consult a physician before jogging with your infant."

Why is that? It is safe to jog with your baby? Have you talked to a pediatrician about it?

I really would like to work up to jogging with baby--but if I have to wait until 1 year, I might just jog with baby in a carrier on my back at one year (pending pediatrician approval).
