@mrskc: well, unfortunately, the only thing you can really do is let it run its course, which lasts about a week. this is going to get a little graphic...but a lot of people want to take immodium to make it stop, but i think its really counterproductive. your body is just trying to flush the bacteria out of your body and to take immodium to stop it could just make it worse. just stay hydrated (which will definitely make you go more, but you kind of have to do it anyway). the first day is the worst and then at some point, it becomes just a nuisance and it doesn't hurt and there's no fever or anything. then it just kinda stops one day. oh also...the important thing after it stops is to replenish the natural good bacteria in your intestines, because that, along with the bad bacteria, has been flushed out of your system. otherwise you could have the opposite problem and be horribly constipated (yes, it has happened to me before)! so yogurts are good for that and i've heard of probiotic pills, but never taken them. this is probably way too much information, but i hope it can help in some way!

@JessLC: Yeah the water is what I'm worried about. From what I understand, tap water is not safe to drink in Taiwan. Even locals boil their water before drinking it. I guess I'll have to be careful when going out to eat. Good point about the fruits and salads being washed in the water! what do you do if you get sick?

in terms of food borne illnesses, i've gotten sick so many times going abroad. the biggest thing to watch out for is the water, of course, but the things that will trip you up is raw foods like fruits and salads (which are washed in the water) and don't get any ice in your drinks. any juices or drinks that are blended or not from a can/bottle could get you sick, even if it is from a nice restaurant or cafe. brush your teeth with bottled water if you are really worried.

not sure if it helps any, but that is what i've learned after suffering from week long bouts of montezuma's revenge on multiple occasions. anyway, enjoy and have a great time!

I travelled early in my second trimester from the UK to Canada/New England (not exactly third world or with food worries!), but the biggest thing I noticed during travel was how much more easily I got dehydrated. Be sure to stay on top of drinking water during and after the flight. Have fun!

I traveled to St. Lucia while pregnant. I was 14-15 weeks. We stayed on resort so food wasn't really a big issue (we really didn't eat anyway because we found the food nasty). I did get sick a lot while driving but I get car sick anyway and those island roads were not pregnant motion sick prone lady friendly. I also got sick in the plane ride (again not really a surprise). I'd suggest getting some Sea Bands for travel. Wish I had them! Good luck and have fun!

I went to Europe (Belgium and Germany) for a few weeks during my second trimester (left Canada during 18 weeks-ish). I had the most amazing time and was on my feet and walking about for 8-10 hours a day.

Drink lots of water on the flight to avoid swelling and try to get an aisle seat 'cause there will be LOTS of washroom breaks.

Have a great time and be safe!

@sloaneandpuffy: I'm trying to stay relaxed about it. I'm not too worried. Just hope I don't eat something there that my body isn't used to.

Hey! I live in another country while pregnant, does that count? Just kidding. Living in Mexico and receiving lots of visitors, I have to say that the most paranoid people are the ones who ALWAYS get sick. So, by all means be careful, but try not to think about it too much.

I'm leaving tomorrow on a 14 hour flight to Taiwan to visit DH's family there. I'll be 19 weeks and my OB gave me the ok to go.

Anyone travel out of the country while pregnant? How far along were you? Any tips? My biggest concern is contracting a food borne illness.
