I think it was crucial at first to build supply, and now it's crucial...even if I weren't working part time I'd need a break sometimes!

I work full time, so a high quality double-electric pump is one of the most important baby items for me to purchase. My mom actually already bought it for me for Xmas, even though my due date isn't for another 3 months. I would like to start getting practice with the pump as soon as I get the hang of breast feeding... also, it will be nice for DH to feed baby from a bottle early on.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Thanks! I'll just hold off for now then and see if I end up having supply issues (fingers crossed, I don't!) before investing in an electric.

I wanted to get a pump before giving birth but the hubs convinced me to wait. We ultimately had to rent one from the hospital until we were able to find and buy one that we liked. I don't use mine anymore (and haven't in about 1.5 months) but the first three months of LO's life, I couldn't have survived without it.

I have no idea what I would have done without a pump!!! It was important for me from the beginning for RJ to be able to get a bottle from someone other than me at least once a day. Plus I had such oversupply.

I had an electric pump but not the dual kind. The dual one was too pricey for my budget. It helped alot and glad I had one.

I was so happy to have a pump ready to go when she was born and caused some bleeding blisters. We were able to break that thing out and give me some much needed relief.

@ megwag: As long as you don't have supply issues, you will probably be fine with a manual. I'm in pretty much the same situation and it's fine. It's nice to be able to pump on the couch, in the car, etc.

I was in school when I had my daughter so an electric breast pump was absolutely necessary. This time I will be a SAHM so I will I will probably just get a manual one for just in case.

I'm really interested in this. I'm wondering what type of pump I really need. I'll be a WAHM mom with plenty of flexibility. I would like my husband (or other family members) to be able to feed our baby occasionally and to be able to have a little stash for nights out/time away from baby (not that there will be much, I'm sure).
I know I'll need one if I have supply issues, but I'd hate to spend so much money on something that I really don't need. Any insight/opinions/advice?

Some sort of pump is necessary. I had a double electric because I knew I was going back to work. But when I had blisters or bleeding I pumped that side and only fed the other side. It helped so much to reduce some of the pain. I recommend something for that only.

I used the hospital pump at first. Since then, I pretty much only use a manual since I have to pump infrequently and travel a lot. The electric is too much set-up :) (Although there are times I do wish I'd pumped longer with the electric to build up more of a stash.)

I work so I need an electric, double pump. I try to pump 3-4 times a day for 20 minutes. I'm so fortunate to have a lactation room at my office. It has allowed me to still exclusively breast feed.

Even though I'm home with LO all the time... I had to pump only. She had a hard time getting comfortable latching on while she was on phototherapy for 5 days... so we went to bottle/ tried nursing a little and after those 5 days she wouldn' t latch on at all

@pelikila: yes i think a pump is a necessity to build up supply when it's being established the first month!

I work full-time so I needed a double electric pump. I also needed to build up a freezer supply so I was using it well before I went back to work.

I've seen a lot of different opinions on whether you need a pump before your baby is born. I guess it really depends on your personal experience.

With Charlie I needed one because he was never able to remove enough milk from breastfeeding alone. Plus it allowed me to give my poor sore nipples a break!

With Olive I needed one because I didn't take any maternity leave and needed to pump while working. Plus she stayed an extra week in the hospital so I pumped at the hotel I was staying at (although I could have rented a hospital pump for that I suppose!).
