I always had them in high school! I guess I am a goody two-shoes, so we never got into any trouble. I was terrified of lying to my parents!!

So I would definitely allow my kids to do the same, assuming I trust them!

@eeh: Same here. I wasn't interested in drinking until I could actually legally drink and even now, I drink very rarely. None of my friends really got into any trouble and we lived in a small town. I had sleepovers well into high school and 2 of those friends ended up being my college roommates, which is practically one big sleepover!

Wow-I've never thought about NOT allowing sleepovers. My sister and I started having friends over/sleeping at friends' houses around 6 or 7 and continued well into college. For the most part I liked having friends over at my house more than going to there's because my parents kept a better stash of food and were really laid back. They definitely had rules for us but weren't overly strict at all. I never once lied about where I was going or what I was doing but I also was never interested in drinking/sex/drugs in high school. We typically just watched movies, talked, drove around town, or went to the park for the hell of it. I can't imagine doing anything differently with my own kids unless they've given me a reason to not trust them.

I had sleep overs and went to them all the time. But we lived in the country so it wasn't like you could sneak off any where.... Where are you going to go?! Walk the 30km to town? I don't think so. I will definitely allow it but, like my parents did, I would want to talk to their friends parents just to keep tabs on things.

My theory is, if they are going to drink I would rather it be in our home. It is easier to keep an eye on things and make sure every one is safe. They are going to do it anyways so why make them lie about it.

Wow- we had sleep overs well into college, it never was an issue. I guess it just depends on each individual kid and how responsible they are, but I don't really see it as a problem.

Sure, alcohol was involved here and there, especially in college, but we made plans to stay in one place if it was (and we lived in some very small towns, so a parent was guaranteed to find out if we got caught being irresponsible).

I totally lied about sleepovers in high school. Sometimes there was alcohol, sometimes I wasn't at who's house I said I was at... anyway. It's a bad idea. I would probably stop the sleepovers at 7th or 8th grade actually, with "kids these days." :)

We always did sleepovers in high school. My mom was friends with all of my friends parents, so it would have been hard to lie about it because they always talked. We loved sleepovers in high school, they were very innocent. We would eat junk food and watch girly movies. I'm not going to deprive LO of that.

I think as soon as she turns 13, I'll forbid it. The things they do these days...Scary. But like Mr. Bee said, my kids will be so busy and exhausted anyway.

Also, sleepovers might be a once-in-a-while thing...A birthday or something so I don't anticipate it happening often. Am I naive?

i wrote it in the sleepover post, but won't be allowing sleepovers in hs. no way! don't trust them! lol.

edit: i guess it also depends on what you mean by sleepovers. my answer was assuming they'd sleepover someone else's house. i don't mind people coming over to sleep over....

So, when they're young, it's cute and innocent for kids to have sleepovers. What about when they get older? Do you trust your kids enough to let them, "sleep at Laura's house tonight" or do you stop sleepovers all together?

I worry about the lies and then where they will be sleeping - will parents be there? How many kids are staying over? Will there be alcohol? Ack!
