So how it works is when I read novels, I just pay attention for references to food or meals, and chart them down. Then, I research the meal described in the context of the novel. Say, for instance, its a novel set in or written in the 1800's in New England and they talk about making maple syrup and baked beans. I will try to figure out what would have been authentic recipes for that time period and place, and then I'll either use a recipe and make the food described, or I'll make up my own recipe. That would be an easy sort of example.</p> <p>The Game of Thrones series by George RR Martin is great for this game, he describes tons of foods and meals. One scene described a "fish stew". So, there are several ways you can go - like...would the characters be eating a creamy stew like clam chowder or more like a bouillabaisse, or something else entirely? I figure out the context of the land/people/culture in which the fish stew was described, research their "real world" cultural counterparts, then I make fish stew. In that case, I made a bouillasbaisse. </p> <p>Another fun one was "white soup" which is the only reference to food found in Pride &amp; Prejudice. It isn't described in detail at all, its just a passing remark. So I research what "white soup" is, in the time period when Pride &amp; Prejudice was written. I try to determine what class differences their might have been to white soup (i.e., what meats might the wealthy have used, vs. the poor). I try to find authentic recipes either from online sources, or at the library.
