The only babysitters we usually get are for after he's asleep, and we're usually close by, so we don't bother interviewing them... they're all college students from our church or friends. Otherwise the only people we've left him with are our parents!

In addition to the questions above, I would ask if they are up to date on vaccinations.

I wouldn't be afraid to ask if they smoke. I don't want that around my LO or them leaving LO while they take a break.

I have been a nanny for a very long time, so I have an idea of what things should be asked.

- describe your scariest experience with kids? (this will show how they handle stressful situations, such as a baby choking)
- do you know/certified in infant/child CPR?
- for multiple children: if both children are crying, what do you do?
- what do you normally feed kids you watch?
- are you willing to keep a journal/log of your day/night with LO?
- describe 5 activities you would do with each age group: 0-6 mos, 6-12 mos, 2 yrs etc
- what is your favorite age child to watch?
- describe your past experience, how many families, how many kids, what ages, what did you do, how were the kids temperaments?
- what is your ideal babysitting job?
- what do you personally enjoy doing?

Hopefully that gets you off to a good start!!

Oh, and one idea if you're nervous about hiring someone: have her start out watching LO while you're there. Do work around the house/ in your office, that way you can see how she interacts with LO and how you LO takes to her (I think children's intuition is pretty reliable!). You can get to know her better as well. I have done this with many families.
