@red_seattle: No idea! Their insurance covered it as well, but for whatever reason the hospital didn't perform circumcisions at all. It could have been that particular hospital? Not too sure!

@Mrs. Wagon, we live in Washington state, and Baby X was born in November. He was circumcised in the hospital 24 hours after he was born by the pediatrician affiliated with my OB/midwife practice. Maybe because it was covered by our insurance it was different than your friend's experience?

There ate several ways of doing it. My first son had this ring put on and they told us that it would fall off in a week or two just like the belly button. I had to bring him to the dr to have it done because he was adopted and the birth other didn't have it in the hospital. He was six days old and it was awful. He cried all day and I could not soothe him at all.

With my twin boys they did it in the hospital. Our new pediatrician said he uses the tool that is typically used at a bris because he is Jewish and preferred it. I told him fine as long as it wasn't that ring thing. My experience with that was much like the other posters. They brought both boys back happy and alert in little over a half an hour. Recovery was easy just big globs of vasaline in their diapers for a few days.

During the hospital stay they took him away, did it, and brought him back and he was asleep. That's pretty much all I know!

My friend who just had her baby in Washington state says the hospitals don't do them anymore because they're not covered by all insurances, so they went to a clinic that JUST does circumcisions. They called the doc "The Circumciser". She described the procedure (she watched) and I'm SO GLAD I didn't know what it was like. Especially because Wagon Jr.'s circumcision wasn't very complete-- he basically does not look circumcised.

We had DS circumcised at the hospital; I'm sure it's somewhat different from what you'll experience with a bris, but it was honestly much worse for me than it was for him.

I accompanied the pediatrician and one of the nurses to the nursery. They unwrapped DS, took off his diaper and laid him on a board on the counter. The board had two grooves, and they strapped his legs in there so he couldn't move. Then the doctor reswaddled just his upper half. That was the worst part for him; he cried until he was reswaddled and then he immediately went back to sleep.

Assisted by the nurse, the doctor used a local anesthesia to numb his penis and scrotum. Then he gave DS three shots of another anesthesia so he was entirely numb. He then used a bunch of tools I had never seen before to separate the foreskin and cut it off. The whole process took about 15 minutes and it was very gory. Not so much bloody, but just gory. We discussed proper care as the nurse cleaned DS and rediapered him. I dressed him and reswaddled him properly; DS never woke up.

DS didn't seem bothered by it at all. He ate normally, slept normally, and was never cranky enough to warrant any other pain medication, once the anesthesia wore off. The first three days were challenging during diaper changes but DS was entirely healed by day 7.

We had baby Stroller circumcised. I like Mr. Stroller make the decision. They took him to the nursery for the procedure and brought him back about an hour later. He then slept for 7 hours straight.

The first diaper was awful. Mr. S almost passed out from the blood and I started to cry. It got better and was fully healed after about a month(!)

The day after DS was born, my OB did the procedure. He told me he was gonna do it when he came to check on me. I didn't even know when it was actually done, they just brought him in my room and said it was finished. He was pretty sleepy the rest of the day and wouldn't really breast feed, but took a bottle fine. He didn't seem like it really bothered him at all.

Ours was in hospital. The nurses took LO away to do the procedure and brought him back about 30 min later. He was happy and chirpy when he came back, slept soundly that night. Aftercare was easy. LO didn't seem uncomfortable at all, didn't need any medicine at any time for pain.

@lemondrop: sounds like our experiences were similar.

No bris here, but our pediatrician did it while in the hospital. It really wasn't a big deal- they recommended we not be there to watch it. They took him away for about 30 minutes, and he came back nice and calm and alert.

It was easy to care for afterwards, we just put a big glob of petroleum jelly on it in the diaper for about 10 days, that was it.

In the animal world they remove dewclaws and tails from puppies at a couple of days old, usually within a few minutes and a little nursing they have forgotten all about it, so that was how my husband and I thought of it.

@MamaMoose: I'm Jewish, so we would have a special ceremony for it. My mom said that she didn't watch for my brother though.... but we do have it on tape.

The nurse took my LO away to the procedure room and brought him back after the doctor was done. I cried while he was gone though. I couldn't handle causing my precious baby pain. My husband wanted him to look like he did.

I'm glad I am having a girl this time so that I don't have to put her through that.

My understanding is that most of the time the baby is brought to the nursery or some other procedure room. My friend is a pediatric NP and she HATES it when the parents want to watch her do a circumcision.

If we ever have a boy, we will be getting a bris. I'm very happy that we had a girl, because I'm terrified to see my LO go through that.
