I was positive that BFing would not work for me bc I know from being on here there are SO many problems that can arise. I was really shocked that we've really had no issues. My daughter got Breastmilk jaundice (crazy rare!) and we had to go to FFing for several days, and she had a hard time latching again after getting lazy with bottles (I did not use slow-flow bc I just wasn't aware and it was very sudden that we had to go to FFing)....But after a couple of days she was fine and now takes slow-flow bottles when Daddy feeds her without any issue going back to the boob. She's actually quite a pig and will eat anything, any time, anywhere, any temperature.

@Pink Champagne: i get that some ladies who are currently having some problems/difficulties may read this may be irked, but hopefully they wouldn't be too interested in reading a thread with this title while they are currently going through something.

I do find this thread is also bringing out lots of stories like yours where people overcame their problems and NOW it's smooth sailing - which may also be comforting and anxiety-reducing for moms-to-be to know that while some things might happen, it does get better and chances are good that it will be easy and problem-free for the most part, as in, it's not a constant struggle for the entire time you choose to breastfeed.

No serious struggles. LO and I are normal, I didn't have supply issues or anything...but we did have to wean off a nipple shield, which was unnecessary and delayed us from learning how to latch. Now I have a baby who has some bad habits and gives me sore nipples if she's being lazy, but really, that's nothing compared to what it could be! It's so worth it!

@MamaBehr: I'm the second born and while I'd like to be offended at the "epic failure" comment...I had a horrible latch as a baby and tore up my mom for months, haha!

I don't think this thread is "bragging", but I found the other threads more comforting, because while they touch on issues you can have, every bf'ing class says "If it hurts, you're doing it WRONG", they don't mention how hard it can be, no one talked to me about all the little things that can go wrong.
I had lots of minor issues (cracked nipples, baby who wouldn't open his teeny tiny mouth, clogged ducts) but we worked through it and after 6 weeks we never had another issue.
So yeah, it's good to know that some women had no issues, so as to not completely scare women, but it's not as helpful to know that as it is to know that there can be problems but that you CAN work through them. Honestly, it's awesome that a lot of your babies came out of the womb with their mouths wide open and immediately latched on like they were supposed to, but back then, when I was having problems, I would have punched anyone who said how easy breezy their time was. ;)

I voted "major problem", but we did overcome it within the first 4 weeks so maybe that's not the right category. Here's a quick recap of our story:

Everything in the hospital was great. Got home and my nipples were cracked and bleeding, baby was spitting up blood and losing too much weight and not gaining at his subsequent visits. I got a nipple guard at the advice of my sister, which helped me heal, but used for only 24 hours because I saw a LC at 1 week of age and she said not to use one. We worked on the latch and she thought he may have a tongue tie (although my pedi did not think so). I saw a breastfeeding specialist MD who said he did have a tongue tie, which was clipped at 2 weeks old. My supply had meanwhile tanked. I took fenugreek, pumped tons and supplemented with pumped milk until he had regained to his birthweight (around 1 month) and then it was fine. So 1 month of a REAL struggle to have a great BF'ing relationship. It was a struggle getting there though! BUT totally worth it :)

While we have had a few hiccups along the way I would say that resolving them has been easy. I have had such wonderful support from the post partum nurses, the lactation consultant, our pediatrician, and my husband. I gave birth to a very large baby that lost more than 10% of her weight within three days of birth so the psychological implications of not having enough milk for her initially were tough. The nurses really helped me stay strong and she has been gaining weight very well ever since. Then she got thrush and gave it to me (or vice versa) but her pedi (who works at the International Breastfeeding Center one day a week) was quick acting and we had it cleared up within two days. She also had trouble maintaining a strong latch and would slip off towards the end of a feed, but the lactation consultant helped me learn ways to keep her drinking. So overall, with the right help we've had a fairly easy go of it. Had I not had the support I do it would have been very difficult.

LO and I had a very easy time with BF, she took to it like a champ from the very beginning and I have had great supply. Only issue we ever had was I got mastitis when she was 4 weeks old, but honestly since we caught it quickly I called it a minor problem as I was feeling better after a few days of antibiotics.

DD was a CHAMP! Even the Lactation Consultant said so :) No problems, ever.

DS, however, was an epic failure (and the second kid... go figure). He was such an epic failure that I only nursed him until he was 3 months old.

He latched on right away after birth, my milk came in the day after he was born and the CLC at the hospital only gave me tips on how to rouse and interest him if he was too sleepy and not nursing. He was pretty much attached to my boobs nearly nonstop for the first 5 months, and I never had any pain or cracked/bleeding nipples. I still haven't used my lanolin.

I was braced for any number of problems/pains, and am so grateful we've had such an easy time.

i guess i neglected to mention that the one problem i have been dealing with is that L has sometimes been refusing to bf lately (I made another thread about seeking advice). it's very stressful when it happens, but i don't see it as a problem with being capable of bf, it's more like i need to figure out when is the best time by reading his signals and cues. when he does nurse (which is actually still every few hours), we have no problem with it - i just need to keep up with his new developments and needs that are constantly changing!

4 weeks in and smooth sailing so far even with a tongue tie on R. i love this thread because i too thought that problems were inevitable! i think education is huge and i've gone to a couple BF support groups which has been great to hear other issues that moms face and realize that things are normal and it's process!

I had NO issues in the beginning - so blessed! He picked up latching/sucking SO well right away. He nursed for 45 minutes straight the day he was born!!! so cute.

At 3.5 months old we developed thrush though, so I voted "one minor problem". It wasn't exactly easy to overcome as I had to give up all sugars/grains for a month to kill the yeast and apply gentian violet to my breasts and LO's tongue every day... My breasts itched/hurt like crazy and LO went through a big nursing strike and I had to pump to get him to eat. So I kinda wished I could quit but I pushed through that month and we got through it and I'm so glad we did!!!

It's been smooth sailing since - and we've blessed to have been so lucky.

My traumatic birth led to a sleepy drowsy baby who wouldn't latch at first. I was able to pump to start my supply and give that to her in a bottle, and on day five she latched on, and we never looked back. I had a bit of help from nurses and lactation consultants, and that was it. Never any pain while nursing, problems with supply, anything. Frequently nursing at 17 months and I still love it.

Yay! I love these stories! Breastfeeding has been one of those 'in the far back of my mind' anxieties. My brain tells me everything will most likely be fine but you hear so many horror stories it's insane. Not trying isn't an option for me but I've been so surprised at how many people IRL have just said not to even try!

LO is almost 8 weeks old and breastfeeding has been very smooth so far. She latched on right away at the hospital and has gained weight very quickly - she was born at 5 lbs 15 oz. and was 7 lbs 9 oz. at her 1-month appointment.

The only hiccup we've had so far was one day when she was congested and didn't want to nurse. But otherwise, I've been pleasantly surprised by the whole breastfeeding experience. I don't enjoy pumping, but I have to go back to work next month so I'm just sucking it up.

@Mrs. High Heels: i was told (by a friend) that the lanolin cream was an essential item, so i bought a tube before i gave birth....and returned it a month pp because i never opened it! and i had wondered why the cream was never even mentioned during my BF class....i kind of figured out that if everything is going well, it is not an essential item!

I had an easy time with BFing from the beginning. No pain, cracked, or bleeding nips. LO had a good latch. The first 4 weeks were rough because it was just an adjustment and I was learning. My only struggles were finding a comfy position to nurse in and I had a crazy fast let down that was a milky mess. He would pop off and milk would go squirting everywhere. I feel lucky that its been so easy so far.

Breastfeeding sounded more terrifying to me than childbirth because all I heard while pregnant with my first was how difficult it was... and way too many stories about cracked, bleeding nipples.

I was pleasantly surprised when DD was able to latch on immediately right after I gave birth, and it was even more surprising that it didn't hurt. I hardly even used nipple cream and actually gave mine away! It came so naturally for us. I loved the bonding experience and I loved cuddling with her during late night feedings.

DS was in the NICU for 15 days, so I pumped while he was in there, and the day I was allowed to finally nurse him, it was a breeze, like the first days he was in there didn't count! After I got him home, it was easy, smooth sailing. It all just came really natural to us, even though I did a LOT of reading and talking to people about it. I was very well prepared on it.

No problems with either baby. No supplementing. I asked my kids' doctor why she thought more ladies didn't breastfeed and she thought it was a confidence problem for many. Not saying that's everyone's root issue but have faith in yourselves, ladies! More likely than not, it will be fine ;)

I had some cracks/bleeding and a case of mastitis that lasted a couple of days, but cleared without meds. I'm coming up on a year and have found it to be such a positive experience. The only time I really remember thinking it sucked was at the 6 week growth spurt. What a great idea to share positive experiences! I found all the talk of problems on here really made me nervous and anxious before hand.

I only had one problem, which was that my milk came in a little late (day 5). It was actually fine, though. DS got some formula supplements for a day and a half while I pumped after feedings for a couple of days to coax the milk to come in. Once it did, we were fine! I'm only 6.5 weeks in, but have never had any pain, bleeding, or cracked nipples. DS was a sleepy baby and we had to learn how to do this together, but it really was easy to resolve.

I like this thread and and don't think this kind of sharing is bragging. I had heard so many horror stories that, while I was determined to try breastfeed, I thought intense pain was the norm and that there was a good chance it wouldn't work out anyway. I was pleasantly surprised that it did, even with my c-section, and only learned later that it typically doesn't work as badly as I feared it would.

I've had absolutely no problems with breastfeeding even though LO didn't start actually breastfeeding until she was ten days old (she was in the NICU, but was drinking pumped breastmilk). It has been an extremely great bonding time for us. She latched on like a pro & we have had a smooth ride! We are 3 months in!

I watched a bunch of BFing videos before LO arrived and then the first time I nursed him he latched right on and the nurses said I was a natural. I was so afraid it would be difficult but the only issue was that it hurt a little the first 2 weeks. No mastitis, clogged ducts, or anything and LO is 9 months now.
