Well I was homeschooled, so my mom was pretty much my "teacher."
However, homeschooling is actually super independent and I did most of my work myself. My mom only helped if I really needed it.
By the time high school came, my parents did not help me at all.
Now, I help my mom and dad with THEIR homework! :)

We help our oldest with her homework daily.
Sometimes it's just to review what she did on her own or other times to actually sit and walk her through it.
Regardless of what she needs from us, someone takes time nightly to focus solely on her and her school work needs.
Which I think is the way it should be.

If they need it, sure. Even if they don't, I still plan on asking them about what they're studying and keeping a close eye on their academics. I want them to know it's important.

My parents helped occasionally, like when I had to make a report on Hawaii in the shape of the state, my dad helped me figure out how to do it, and when I was baking a double crusted pie from scratch for my junior high Home Ec class. But they never did my work or gave me answers . . . for example, my mom did not remind me to peel my apples while making the pie. :) My dad said I just left the vitamins in. :D

The best support I received was in the form of structure, i.e., now is *homework* time, which really helped me to make the time necessary to do my work properly. Oh, and my parents always made the environment condusive to homework, i.e., if I really wanted to work at the dining room table or coffee table, my mom would turn off the t.v. and stuff like that.

@Grace: yes! i think more emphasis needs to be put on the entire learning process versus just getting all the right answers on your homework/tests. i want to focus a lot on critical thinking vs rote memorization because i think i did well in a lot of classes just purely on memorizing everything but not necessarily understanding everything.

It depends. I think there's a lot of good that comes from a kid struggling a little bit and learning how to work it out on their own and find the answers. That being said, I hope to be able to determine the fine line between productive frustration and destructive frustration (turns them off to school/learning completely). I think a lot of parents are too quick to jump in and "help" and just give the kids the answers or show them where the answers are at. I don't think that's helpful at all.

Of course! My parents helped but never did my homework for me. I still remember my mom telling me to pull out our big blue dictionary if I needed to know how a word was spelled!

If they need it, then yes. I'd explain or guide them, but never do it for them. I know it can be frustrating when you know the answer and can get it done in 5 minutes vs watching them struggle and take forever, but they need to learn to advance! Concepts only get more difficult.

It's important not to help kids too much. I would just write a note to the teacher to let them know. If I see areas where they are struggling...I might get them a practice workbook and have them do stuff there. I don't want to have to pay for a tutor if I can do it myself. I don't like it at all when parents do their kids homework! It really is a disservice.

My mom used to type my papers in junior high because she was an administrative assistant we didn't have computer at home. I'm pretty sure she would correct stuff for me. I was very grateful at the time. I am still a good 'first draft' writer but my editing skills suck.

I plan to help my kids out in elementary school and if they struggle in math or science, I'll be available to help. I will not be one of those parents who does their kid's science project. Yeah, don't think so.

yeah. My parents didn't help me much when I was in middle/high school because they said they didn't know the stuff (mostly math), my dad knew it but is not a patient teacher so we'd end up in a fight. I mostly had my older brother help me, when I got into college I relied on the tutoring center for my harder subjects, like chemistry.

So I will of course help my LO because I do still kind of resent my parents' uninvolvement in my schooling, it was a sore point for us and still kind of is. We avoid talking about it. I know I won't be of much help with math, but my husband is a math teacher so we'll have that covered. I will help with whatever I can, or else find a way to help them (like a private tutor).

I feel like it depends on how my LO is doing on her own. My parents didn't help me and I got mostly A's. What they did do was tell me that I must get all A's! I guess that was enough for me because I did not want to disappoint them.
