My dad's salary alone is more than DH and my incomes combined...and we're not in low paying professions. I don't think we'll ever surpass my parents' income though -- and that's with just one of them working. My dad had a very high paying job. Right now we make more than they did at our age though. In a few years we hope to be making the same amount of money my parents were at their peak (about five years ago). I'm not exactly sure of how much they made but I have a general idea, and we're definitely not there yet!</p> <p>There are, of course, variables... Actually, DH will because I don't work right now. We're well on our way, and are actively trying to pay off debt before owning a home. We pay more in rent, but it's important to me to knock out the debt we have before saving for the down and free up the monthly cash for a nicer house in the long run. I think it's about goals re homeowning at this point. Our goals are just slightly different than theirs were at our age, and like a lot of you, we're in way more debt (education and cc). My husband and I have more overall debt (just student loans and mortgage) though.</p> <p>My FIL and step-MIL both have pensions, which we won't have - so their future is more financially secure than ours, unless we plan well for it.
