@chibee: I didn't see this until just now, I'm so sorry for not responding! She seems to have grown out of it--now when she fusses I'm pretty sure it's gas. It may have been had all along. I also saw a lactation consultant and it turns out I have a fast letdown, and i was over feeding her (letting her hang out at the boob for over an hour). How are things going with your LO?

I have a 4 week old and is going through the same thing - he arches his back and cries sometimes during a feeding in addition to everything you're describing. I have to make sure to keep him upright during feedings and after, we avoid a lot of activity for a while after a feeding (no diaper changes, tummy time, etc.) and he sleeps on an incline (naps in swing, or while held, night time in rock n play). I'm actually calling the doctor today to see if she can put him on zantac like we discussed last week because he projectile vomited yesterday twice and he has never done that before.

Let me know what you end up doing, seems like we are in the same boat!

My LO spit up a lot, and I was doing laundry daily to keep up with all of his clothing changes during the day. He didn't appear to be bothered by it though. He had normal poops until around 6-7 weeks. It turned mucousy with streaks of red blood. After a lot of trial and error, I eliminated dairy, soy, gluten, peanuts, and tree nuts from my diet. He spit up a lot less after a few days of changing my diet (initially just dairy).

My lo had silent reflux which sounds a bit more like your case. There doesn't have to be lots of spitting up to be reflux. We used meds to control it for over a year (Prevacid). We also had him sleep at an incline and held him upright after feedings. Also, we feed him in a more upright position and made sure not to rock or move while feeding.

@bushelandapeck: was your PCP at all concerned about the stomach acid burning his esophagus? That's the only thing I can think of when she is crying :(

@babybean404: We ended up not doing anything with medication and trying to keep him elevated during/after feeds and when sleeping. He slept in our room in a rock and play for 5.5 months before we transitioned to his room. Our PCP felt that because his weight was goo and he was eating well, we didn't need to go the route of medication. He grew out of it right around 6 months.

@babybean404: Yes. From my understanding, allergies and oversupply issues usually show up in the poop. Your baby's poop sounds like its pretty normal. Until you see your pediatrician try feeding smaller meals more frequently and keep baby upright at least 20 mins after a feeding. Sleeping at an incline may also help.

DS had reflux as well and it was similar to what you are describing. I would probably call your PCP to see what they recommend.

@Leah: yes they are mustard colored and seedy. Would they be different if it were allergy related?

@babybean404: it does sound like reflux to me. Are baby's poops mustard colored with curds? If the poops are mucousy, that could signal allergies.

This is what I'm seeing with my 5 week old (EBF):

-frequent spit up. Not sure if it is technically "projectile" but it has hit the floor and back of my legs when she's over my shoulder., covered couch cushions behind us, etc.
-spit up is curdled and smells acidic/like vomit.
-spitting up an hour or more after feeding.
-pain(maybe gas pain, maybe not?) after feedings/spitting up at night and in the morning. Squirming, pulling her legs up, crying.
-gas (lots of burps), sometimes spitting up after/with burp.
-frequent "wet" hiccups that seem to bother her a lot.

Does this seem like normal spit up behavior? Sometimes I think, "oh she is just a happy spitter" but after the more projectile-like episodes she is not happy.

We have tried keeping her upright after feedings and it hasn't seemed to have made much of a difference. She comfortably goes to sleep on her back at night and for naps (after she's burped and spit up and I've calmed her down) and she doesn't spit up in her sleep.

Could this be reflux? Should I cut out dairy? Advice please!
