I think it's pretty clear we'll all be staying home way more often for the next, so anything that makes that more fun and/or helps outdoors gatherings is the top of my mind. Ideas for a home (not apartment)

- Outside propane heater
- Firepit
- Extendable marshmellow sticks
- Better grill
- More outdoor seating
- Playset
- Outdoor solar string lights
- Bluetooth outdoor speaker
- Movie projector
- Roomba (honestly, 2 of these....)
- Amazon Echo Dots & Amazon Music

If I was going to splurge on something for the home (and had the room) I'd get a billiard table or a real piano. If it was something just for me, I'd go to get my hair done weekly, or at least every two weeks. My hair is not manageable when left to its own devices.

@karenbme: haha I bought a new work wardrobe for going back in January too. And I was back in the office for about two months. I can't believe it, the one time in almost ten years I splurge on nice new clothes, ends up I can't wear them unless I want to look ridiculous on the playground.

Movie projector. We got one last spring to host a birthday party, and we use it in our living room all the time. We also have a portable screen which we used for backyard movies this summer. It is festive to watch movies with hydrangea bushes and fireflies as the backdrop!

We always have a million house projects lined up waiting for $ to be saved up! Not very romantic or fancy but being able to complete something on our wish list always feel like a huge win. We added insulation to our attic last month, and next on the list is replacing our water boiler, and next huge item is actually to install a whole house generator.

@Mommy Finger: @Chuckles: @poppygirl15: @hellobeeboston: @nwm: Sounds like we should get a cleaning service 😂 it might be a little awkward, to be working from home while they’re here, but I can always shut the office door. 😉 I probably wouldn’t count it as my celebratory splurge, but def a good idea.

@hellobeeboston: I thought about a rental, but we’re already in a renovated house in an adorable New England village in peak fall/early winter. If we’re making our own food and cleaning up after ourselves I’d almost rather be in our home. I’m not particularly keen on peleton, but I did think about starting to work with a trainer (virtually or in person) which would be totally for me and a good way to force myself to carve out time to workout.

@nwm: I’m all for selfish 😃 truthfully, I bought a bunch of new work clothes before going back after DD in January that have all just hung in my closet since going remote, and I probably won’t get much use out of except for occasional client visits now. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have toyed with the idea of a nice piece of jewelry though...

i am a huge advocate for house cleaners as well. when i got a big promotion at work, i bought myself a jacket and a purse that i had been wanting, that sounds a little more selfish than what i think you were envisioning!

I have to agree with the cleaning service - it forces you to keep things tidy in between their visits and its the best money ever spent! haha, I love our cleaners so much.

Paving your driveway?
Landscaping project?
Upgrading countertops in kitchen?
Buying a Peloton?

Rent a house/treehouse or some kind of cool getway for the night for the two of you --- i'm in New England and there are so many awesome unique stays that you could do for a night or two, then you don't have to worry about others....

I love the idea of fresh flowers every week! I asked for a gift card to our local florist for my birthday this year, and it's been so nice to feel like I can treat myself a little. (they do curbside pick up)
I also totally agree with a cleaning service! It really is the best. Though if you're working remotely, you'll have to think about how you'll feel about being home with the cleaning person there.

I agree with @Littlebit7: 100% cleaning service!!!! Ours comes every other week and it is so nice to come home to a clean house. I'm sure your house isn't as bad as you think and trust me, they've seen worse. I actually think my cleaning lady keeps me cleaner since we're all "forced" to pick up and put things away before she comes. I would rather she spend her time actually cleaning vs picking up our clutter. Game changer!

@karenbme: it’s life changing for real. It’s so much easier to maintain some semblance of clean when you don’t have to do all of the awful stuff all the time. Trust me. Marriage saver, life changing best money I’ve ever spent and will ever spend in my life. I’m so much happier that I don’t have to spend my free time doing household stuff. (And trust me, don’t be embarrassed I promise you the cleaner has seen worse. I used to do home care; I’ve seen baaaad houses but it is what it is). Every time she comes is the best day of my week. (She comes every 2 weeks) YOU DESERVE IT!!!

People overpay on goods and underpay on services!!!!

@karenbme: Congrats on the new job! We recently bought a new mattress (Avocado), new sheets (Company Store), and new blankets (Saranoni) for our anniversary. We also got nice matching white waffle knit robes and white plush bath mats. Our entire bedroom / bathroom space feels brand new!

@Littlebit7: I would totally get a cleaning person, but I am too embarrassed about how dirty our house is. I don’t want anyone to see how bad it gets sometimes 🤣😳

@MoonMoon: I thought about maybe a walking desk since I’ll be at home and not moving between offices/conference rooms/etc. it’ll be really easy to just sit in one place all day.

@JennyPenny: Ooh, that’s a really good idea! I feel like it would take off pressure to just pick something already that happens in store, too.

I’ve always wanted to join a wine club but couldn’t really find one that met what I wanted, so recently I started doing my own version of a wine club. Every quarter I pick 6 nicer bottles from a local store that has online ordering. I like looking at them online because they have descriptions and more info there than in a physical store. I love it because I get to try nicer wines than I normally would pick up and I know I can always rebuy ones I loved (which wasn’t the case with a lot of clubs I saw)

@MountainBaby: Ooh, I like a bed/bedroom revamp. I’ve been thinking about replacing our pillows and some really nice sheets and pillows could be great for a quarantine winter. My dresser is also the last piece of IKEA furniture in the house and it may be time to say goodbye.

@Lahela017: I’m not sure we would use a cappuccino machine. I will say if we weren’t already buying the fancy, small batch coffee beans that would definitely be an upgrade we would be making though 😉

Not really a splurge, but I’m also thinking about starting to pick up fresh flowers every week with the grocery run. The coop we shop at works with local growers to have flowers all winter. And I feel like having fresh flowers through the dark, cold months will be a nice little thing.

So, I’m looking for ideas for something to splurge on for me (and probably DH but not necessarily our kiddo) to celebrate a big new job. In non-Covid times I would call Nana and have her stay with the baby for a night and get a fancy hotel room and dinner at a bougie restaurant, but all of that feels unsafe to us right now. We looked into getting a hot tub, but that would require expanding our electrical panel so was eliminated, and we’re probably going to move once this is all over since my new job is permanently remote and DH has a fairly long commute. Who’s got ideas for big, fun and/or relaxing Covid conscious activities or household upgrades that could move with us?
