I’d live to put my boys in swim lessons but our pools have not opened up again. There are very few kids sports/activities that have been allowed to resume. Fingers crossed for the end of the month. So it is wait and see what we will be allowed to do.

Thanks for sharing everyone - I really like hearing the various ways different families are handling things!

@Alba4: We decided not to start swim lessons this month or next month but will likely start after that, if numbers in our area are still going down or staying steady. We just couldn't bring ourselves to do it yet.

I just signed my kids (4 and 7) up for spring baseball and soccer. We’re trying to decide when to start up with swim lessons again since pool is indoors. We may wait one more month for that!

@erinbaderin: I don't know if it's that or the chlorine, but pools do seem pretty safe. DD1's school resumed swim class this fall - I was really shocked by that, but assumed they know what they're doing. And it's been going OK and not causing outbreaks. They covid test all the classes regularly so they'd know.

My oldest is, he'll play tball this summer. He played tball last summer and soccer in the fall. He's also going to start private swim lessons, which are indoors. That gives me the most pause but we're renting a house for a week this summer that has a pool and I really want him to have some lessons before then.

My kids did baseball and soccer outdoors last fall. They've been in school all year (masked) with no issues so they are very used to wearing masks for long periods of time. We just started them in indoor soccer a few weeks ago. All kids are masked in a large gym and there is only supposed to be one spectator per kid. We are all able to space out.

@catgirl: If it helps I read at one point that pools were considered pretty safe because droplets would fall quickly into the water and get so diluted, plus it’s such a humid space - I don’t get the science at all but I’ve read it doesn’t travel as far in humidity because the air is heavier and so the droplets get weighed down. Or something.

@erinbaderin: Agreed about the amount of space and ventilation. My cousin and her 7 year old got Covid in the fall from a basketball program, even though the kids didn't share balls and were wearing masks. It's hard to do everything perfectly with little kids running around. They were in a school gym.

We skipped the fall season but signed DS (5.5) up for spring soccer and am so happy we did. The YMCA is taking lots of precautions and being outside makes me feel more comfortable.

@erinbaderin: I think that makes a lot of sense. Size of the space, air flow, and number of people.

Swim lessons seem to go against everything we are comfortable doing yet they feel so important. I hate the idea of her missing 1.5-2 years of lessons at a time they are really important. But also hate the idea of being in a closed in area without masks.

For indoor, I think it would depend for me on the size of the indoor space. Like I said, I feel comfortable in the soccer dome because it's massive - I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable in, say, a school gym, depending on the number of participants.

Thanks for your thoughts so far! I agree with others that outdoor activities are pretty safe, so I think it’s likely we’ll do t-ball but I have a month to decide for sure. The indoor activities are where we are still feeling uncomfortable. But I don’t know when that will change...

@Chuckles: I feel like I need something to help me ease back into society :silly:

We signed our son up for activities last summer and will do again this summer. I look very closely at infection rates (they're low and we are in a very protocol-following area) and to us it is worth the minimal risk. I am pretty unconcerned with outdoor transmission, it's almost impossible. my son and husband go skating in an indoor rink, we go to the gym, my son will play t-ball and probably go to Ninja gym. My 2-year-old does gymnastics with the nanny. Masks are required at all times for these, that's why we do them. My 5-year-old attends outdoor summer camp also.

in terms of risks and benefit it is worth it for him to interact and get physical activity. It is a hard choice but I don't see things changing for at least a year. These are important years for our little ones.

We are planning to have our 7 year old do summer camp this summer, with the possibility of changing our minds if things tank before then. But I'm hopeful. He has been doing school remotely this whole year, so I think it will be a good way to ease him back into society :silly: before the fall. But the camps will be outside and, as far as I know, kids will be wearing masks. We will not be returning to indoor swim lessons yet.

Not quite the same, but I’m planning on signing my oldest up for summer camps. I think he’ll have a blast and it’ll be a safe-ish return to normal. We'll probably do swim lessons but ours are outdoor. It kind of feels weird because I know they get pretty close to teach breathing and things but after skipping it last year I really want to get started again. We won’t do soccer or other activities but not for safety reasons. Those seem pretty safe to me but we’ve started to really enjoy empty space on our calendars.

We’ll do outdoor soccer for my older son (and my younger if he wants it, but he’s less of an organized class kid). We did it last summer too, numbers were low here, and it was pretty funny - the kids were in a giant huddle the whole time chasing the ball and then at the end they weren’t allowed to high five the other team due to Covid protocols - but being outside and with low case counts it felt pretty safe. We were actually doing indoor soccer in the fall - it was in a giant dome so nearly the airflow of being outside - but it got shut down in November when we went into the red zone and hasn’t started back up.

Will you be signing your kids up for sports or similar activities this Spring or Summer?

We haven't had DD in any activities since last spring. She has been in school (hybrid schedule) since September and we have had outdoor play dates with her school friends (always with masks). We "bubbled" with my mom and step dad at the end of last Summer which has made us very careful with our interactions.

But now we are really struggling with this decision. I think DD would love T-ball and possibly some other sports - these things would be outside and seem like a very small risk. But also she really needs more swim lessons - but those are inside and seem like a much bigger risk. And then the risk seems to grow for any activities if we do more than one. So I'm just curious how you are approaching sports and activities??
