@Skadi: I already said that I felt like this monitor was a bit much and that I personally would not use one. I agree that monitors like this are more about giving the illusion of control, but disagree about the hyper vigilant/obsessive mentality - I still feel like that's just over-simplifying the issue of crib safety. There's a large area of middle ground between being obsessive/hyper-vigilant and saying that SIDs is rare so you don't worry about it.

I can't imagine a baby is actually safer using something like this, so it seems more for the parents' anxiety. Baby monitors make sense to me, as people are more spread out in homes and it let's you see/hear if your baby is in distress quickly. All that other stuff...idk. just doesn't seem necessary to me. Especially in the early days, I think it's important to learn to pick up on your baby's cues about their mood/needs. For me this kind of product is too much.

@WonderStruck According to what I've read about SIDs statistics, less than 0.06% of babies die of SIDs each year. That number is so small that it doesn't seem like something that warrants this much anxiety. More babies die in car crashes, in the bath, choking on food, etc. Every individual instance is a tragedy, there's no doubt about it. But should we allow our fear of the What If keep us glued to the video monitor or scare us half to death when something like the Sproutling gives a false alarm? I don't know. I feel like we as a society come at it from a position of wanting to control the uncontrollable and unforeseeable. I guess I'm not totally convinced that monitors like this truly save that many lives instead of just giving the illusion of being in control while creating a hyper vigilant / obsessive mentality.

Well, I wouldn't say it's a needless worry - my grandparents lost a baby to SIDS when he was 3 months old, so honestly I think your POV on 'going back to a time when parents had to learn early on to not worry so much even though they couldn't see/hear every little movement and sound the baby makes' is over-simplifying a bit. People still worried and people's babies did still pass away in their cribs. That being said, this product is just way too much for me - I can see it easily disturbing my own sleep and am very skeptical about some of its claims, like telling you if baby is in a good mood or not.

If this was available when DD was born, as first time parents, we've probably bought it. We would have done anything to lower our anxiety and this is the kind of thing that even if it was just an extra 5 mins each time we put her down, it would have been worth it because maybe, just maybe, it would ease our tensions enough so we can actually fall back asleep.

DD's now 2. If we ever have another (as a second time mom), I wouldn't bother. I know babies are not as fragile as they seem

@Mrs. Lion: Ooh I love the idea of loaning them to nicu families! Part of me wishes doctors could somehow be involved in handing them out so people who would benefit would get them.

I feel like it is a great product for some people, I know a family who lost a baby to SIDS and I am sure it would ease their anxiety and make it easier for them to be calmer parents. Me, on the other hand, I would simply become obsessive and worry if it said baby was grumpy or change my plans for the day if sleep was wonky the night before etc. Buying one would make me insane!

I can see where there could be a place for it, and the technology is cool! But i think it does have the potential to be too much for some parents. I want to learn to rely on my baby's cues to the greatest extent possible, and i honestly dont think i would have used any of those features.

I do think it would be cool if hospitals could loan them out to nicu families for the first weeks at home. After taking lo off the monitors i was definitely a little terrified at first and it would have given me a little extra peace of mind. But at the same time, eventually you have to let go and remember that you cant control everything...and i would worry about false readings causing panic.

Honestly, I think its a good use of technology. Probably overkill but if it was relatively reliable it would seem worth it to me. We used the angel care.

The only thing I didn't know was is it an actual monitor? Like does it also transmit audio if the baby cries?

I have so many conflicted thoughts about the new Sproutling baby monitor. It's $200 if you preorder: https://www.sproutling.com/

Here's the promotional video:

http://youtu.be/slyXHix8hLg

The band is worn around baby's ankle and is equipped with a smart sensor that senses heart rate, skin temperature, motion and position. It communicates with the app on your phone and lets you know if your baby is sleeping soundly or if something is wrong. It even tells you if your baby is in a good or bad mood in the morning before going in to wake them up.

The data-obsessed part of me loves this. Especially for the newborn stage. But another part of me thinks it's just too much, and it encourages us all to become helicopter parents who can't stop obsessing about how baby is doing even when baby is peacefully sleeping.

I'm probably a bit biased because we didn't buy a monitor of any kind for our baby (audio or video) because we wanted to try to go back to a time when parents had to learn early on to not worry so much even though they couldn't see/hear every little movement and sound the baby makes.

What do you think? Is this tech something you'll be interested in getting to help your peace of mind? Or is it a sign that parents are more anxious than ever?
