My dad's family is Irish. My maiden name was an Irish name. We don't usually do much celebrating. Usually just make corn beef and cabbage.

DH and I are both VERY Irish/Scottish so we celebrate and host a party every year. Not sure what DH did growing up but I would go to my grandparents house for a corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and soda bread dinner. It's always been one of my favorite holidays - even as a kid - even without any presents or too much hoopla!

Last year we used the holiday to share the news of our baby on the way, and this year I can't wait to celebrate her first St. Paddy's Day. We'll be doing things a little different, our fifth annual party will be a brunch instead of a late night drinking-fest. Alcohol is still going to be very present but we always have a potluck style feast. We skip the 'green' stuff though and just go for Irish treats. I make haggis handpies for the party every year, but have also made ale/whiskey/irish cream cupcakes, banoffee pie, corned beef braid, fresh bread with Irish butter and Irish cheddar, colcannon... And instead of green beer we drink Bass, Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's and the like. I am hungry just thinking about it!

I am Irish. We celebrate with a big dinner, we watch Darby o Gill and the little people. Last year I did a rainbow scavenger hunt for the kids to find a pot of gold. We have a bunch of silly hats. We do usually have some drinks at home but we aren't big drinkers so we just have a fun family day. We are pretty goofy but we have a great time.

Yep, I'm Irish! Usually only celebrate with a few drinks, and maybe putting out a cute front door wreath (but I do that for most holidays anyway!).

Half Irish/Half German, so any excuse for drinking is good by me! We usually make a pitcher of green beer, and last year we had a green food potluck party! This year the potluck didn't work out, and I think it'll be a pitcher of non-alcoholic beer, but still!! :)

My maternal grandfather's parents came from Ireland, and my grandfather was always VERY proud of his heritage. To the point where he insisted on wearing green on St. Patrick's Day, and NO red. (red is of Northern Ireland)

So, it is instilled in me and my family that we must honor our heritage, so yeah, we celebrate. I make corned beef and cabbage on the holiday, make the whole family wear green, and do a few activities with ds.

I'm really hoping dd makes her appearance before St. Patty's day, cause I'd really like her to be a part of it this year. :)

If she comes this week, I have my mom already lined up to bring me my Irish dinner that day, haha.

My husband's maternal grandmother was Irish but he doesn't really identify as Irish. We don't do anything special but sometimes I make something green just as an excuse to bake something fun. We have a local market that makes amazing Irish Soda Bread so if I usually get a loaf!

That's so cool that you're finding more out about DH's family!

Yup, I'm Irish and a masshole so, obviously, I celebrate by drinking excessively and yelling at people in parades :D hahahaha. Today was our parade. DH's mother is making us go to her house for dinner on saint Patrick's day, I am not at all happy about this as I'm sure she doesn't even know it's saint Patrick's day :(

@rachiecakes: haha I assumed you were Irish (for the reasons you said above). I'm about 1/2 Irish, and so is DH. We celebrate by drinking, and sometimes going to a parade. One year we were skiing in Switzerland for St Patrick's Day (with 15 other Bostonians) and we made a waaay bigger deal about it than any of the European tourists. Which made me think it's really only an American thing (sort of like Cinco de Mayo).

I recently found out that DS is Irish!

DH knows very little about his family - he's only ever known his parents and brother, he's the only one born in this country. His parents were both born in Indonesia and were/are (FIL passed away in '94) Dutch citizens. He's very Indonesian looking, tan, dark hair, Asian features. His mother has always said that he's Irish on his father's side but didn't know details. I recently joined Ancestry.com and found that his paternal grandmother was 100% Irish! DH is a quarter Irish!
People always assume I'm Irish but I'm not, I live in Boston and I'm a redhead. That's enough around here! haha

I want to do something special with DS this year. There are a lot of celebrations in town next weekend.

Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Are you Irish??
