My LO is extremely cautious so she never approached the stairs on her own. I want to say around 11 months my husband was watching her and she climbed all the way up the stairs (16 steps). The next day I spent the morning teaching her to get on her belly and push her way down the stairs feet first. We practiced all morning and after that she was able to go up and down the stairs by herself...but we always were with her. We never had gates on our stairs.

We moved from an apt into a split-level house when DD was 13 months old and she learned how to go up the stairs in 2 minutes flat. We have gates all over our house. It's Fort Knox.

@littlek: I guess crawling?

Gah. Sometimes I hate living in a row house. We have a gate at the top of the 1-2 staircase because it's right next to DD's play area, but have so far left the 2-3 staircase alone because DD hasn't seemed interested. Until last night, when I was coming down the stairs and she met me on the 3rd step. Uh oh.

I just ordered two new gates on Amazon. Sigh.

@septca: crawling or walking down/up stairs? Crawling was probably around 10 months. LO is 21 months and he still holds my hand to go up and down stairs. He can do it on his own, but I don't trust him.

My LO could climb stairs before she could walk. Probably around 9 months? We are now at 15 months and walking (let's be honest, running) confidently, but still no where near going down the stairs safely. We have metal baby gates that screw into the wall on both sides and then have a door the swings open and latches shut at both the top and the bottom.

They were climbing stairs before they were walking...maybe 10 months? They slid down on their bellies within a few months. At 18-19 months, they walk up and down the steps upright, holding a hand or the wall. We have a gate at the bottom of the steps, and will keep carpet on it, that's it!

When did your toddler learn to climb stairs? How long after that did it take for them to learn to go down stairs?

What did you do to babyproof/keep your toddler safe until they were good on the stairs?
