DH really wanted to get the stairs in hardwood, but after meeting our contractor, he advised us to keep the carpet until LO was older for safety reasons.

contractors are starting our basement reno next week too! we're having the same dilemma, but ultimately decided to go with carpet as we are heavy in our child rearing years and we need the extra "cushion" for safety.

We have a raised ranch style house, and when we bought it, the stairs going to the main level were hardwood and the stairs going to the lower level playroom were carpet. We decided to remove the carpet and expose the hard wood and we refinished it all to be the same color stain.

We're either barefoot or wearing indoor shoes with treads, so it hasn't been a problem.

I love the look of hardwood, but I have fell down hardwood stairs TWICE in the last couple of years. Hardwood stairs and socks do not mix!

One thing to consider is the huge cost difference! We were goign to do hardwood for our staircase to the basement, but at over $100+ a step, it would have added over a thousand dollars to our flooring cost. It was a lot of money! Carpet was a far cheaper option. Our carpet is that stain resistant scotch guarded kind and I must say, I'm thrilled with it. It's very low, cleans up amazingly easy (even with dirt!) and I can wear socks and not feel like I'm going to fall down the stairs with the baby.

So yeah, carpet, but look at the stain resistant kind! It is AMAZING. Baby barf/spit up literally just pools on it and you wipe it up and call it a day.

The only hardwood stairs I have ever walked on were my IL's and they were SOOOO slippery (especially in socks or slippers) I would NEVER trust myself, kids, or older people on hardwood stairs after those things! Hardwood with a runner, or carpet are my vote.

I was also thinking hardwood with a runner. We don't have stairs, but that's what my parents have. I get nervous about LOs or carrying LOs on hardwood stairs, but maybe I'm just clumsy!

Hardwood with a runner.
My parents pulled up the carpet that had been on our stairs to show off the hardwoods. Five broken bones later they have a gorgeous wool runner.

hardwood! carpet gets gross SO fast. i wish we could hardwood ours but it is $$$ so we're just replacing carpet :( I agree to just add a runner.

@AprilFool: Excellent point! I tripped down the last couple of stairs a day ago, and carpet would have probably left a carpet burn, but not this huge nasty bruise!

We are working on finishing our basement and need to decide how we want to finish our stairs. For some info, we were leaning towards just staining them and then having a landing of hardwood/hard surface flooring that would be at the bottom and then transition to carpet for the main living area. The reason we were thinking this was to reduce the wear and tear on the carpet. At the bottom of the stairs there are three doors along that wall to storage, bathroom, or laundry and we thought a hard surface would last longer and not show worn foot paths. On the flip side, carpet would be better for kiddos going up and down the steps and safer. My concern would be that the carpet would wear quickly or get messy with DH using those stair after long work days. But, would stained stairs, a vinyl or wood landing, and then carpet be too much?

What do you think? And sorry for the rambling!
