Oops, I voted wrong. We use a standalone potty although the seat can also be detached and placed on the toilet. He's just not tall enough to deal with the big potty, and now that he's trained I like to just let him go by himself into the bathroom and go. With another baby, it's not always convenient for me to have to go and help him get on the big toilet.

My sister gave us a Winnie the Pooh potty chair but DD hated it; she didn't like the splash guard bump in front. We opted for a potty seat that sits on the regular toilet plus a step stool which is helpful for washing hands as well. At 3.5yo she often wants to sit "on the big seat" instead of using the potty seat. I wanted to get the toilet seat with built in potty seat but DH didn't want to spend the money on it.

We used both as well as nothing at all. At home we started with the little potty (http://amzn.com/B005ZBHYG2) and took it from room to room (we trained both night and day at the same time and having the little potty right next to C's bed was very helpful in the early days) and in the car for outings so we didn't have to tackle public restrooms in the beginning. Once he went back to daycare he had to use a full sized toilet and for hygiene reasons they couldn't have a little potty in the daycare so he learned to use a full sized toilet with no insert at all (take all the clothes off, put him on the back of the seat and have him lean forward and hold the seat and his penis points down and doesn't spray everywhere). At home once he started refusing the little potty we got the insert (http://amzn.com/B005ZBHZEI) and have used that at home ever since. The reason he had to use a full sized toilet at daycare was because the small toilets they had were in the transitions classroom across the center and we potty trained C when he was still in toddlers so they weren't quite equipped for that but as his bladder got better at holding it and he started self initiating he would go down to the other classroom and use the little toilets.

Potty seat. Mainly bc I don't want to clean out a stand alone. I have to wipe her anyways so I don't mind that sometimes she needs help up, though we have a step stool so she can get up on her own.

LO had both a little trainer potty that sat on the floor and an over-the-toilet seat from Baby Bjorn. He liked the latter best, so that's what we've used. You need some sort of stool to go with it. We just bought a standard Rubbermaid stool.

This is our seat: http://www.target.com/p/babybjorn-toilet-trainer-white-black/-/A-570958

I mostly like it, but it is starting to come apart after roughly a year of daily use, and that annoys me since it wasn't cheap. A small piece of plastic chipped off of the raised part where the bear design is, but it's not in a place where it will potentially scratch him, and the broken part is curved and smooth, so it doesn't pose a laceration hazard. We're careful with it and my LO is not a heavy kid, so I'm not sure why it happened.

We also have one of the Arm & Hammer/Munchkin seats for our other toilet and I like it okay, except it fits a little oddly and has more nooks and crevices which makes cleaning it more difficult. LO seems to prefer the Baby Bjorn one, because he always makes a beeline for that bathroom.

Potty seat, just because it grosses me out to have to dump and clean the bowl of a freestanding potty. Got to use it in conjunction with a little stool though.

@locavore_mama: I know, i had no idea until I was looking to replace the ones in our house, and I saw them!

The brand is Bemis, and they have both round and elongated versions to fit your bowl. Then, when they've moved on from needing it, it just snaps off and you have your regular seat.

@locavore_mama: It is integrated, the one that you just put on top is too much of a pain, as we have to be quick when it's time to go.

We got it at Home Depot!

@Sparkler: that's a great idea to use the standalone downstairs and the seat upstairs. She'll never be upstairs using the toilet alone any way. Which seat do you use?

@looch: does the seat just sit on top of the toilet seat or actually attaches?

We use the baby bjorn downstairs where we spend most of our time so LO can use it on his own. Then we have the seat and stool upstairs, so that we can help him use that in the morning and before bath. Also, our downstairs powder room has a comfort height toliet (higher than standard) so even with a stool, it was way too high to use with a toliet seat for potty training. I didn't even consider that until we started potty training!

Which do you use and why?

We are looking to buy a "potty" for our other 2 bathrooms to assist in potty training.

We currently have a baby bjorn potty and I like that she can get on and off herself. But I wonder if doing that will create another step of training her to use the toilet, flushing, etc?

Which potty do you use? Link please?
