If you get a convertible, get the conversion kit with it if you're planning to make it a full sized bed. The ones for our convertible crib are discountinued and it annoys me to no end.

@deerylou: Yeah, it's the lack of arm support that really was the killer ... just not a spot where you could really curl up.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I tried to like the Poang, but it felt too deep (I'm short), and I wasn't especially thrilled with the lack of arm cushions. The Stork Craft gliders are affordable on Amazon, so we might go that route.

@deerylou: Good call. I cheaped out and got a Poang for the nursery and while I did occasionally sit/nurse in it, it was not the most comfortable spot in the world.

We ended up with the Hensvik crib from IKEA, and are quite happy with the purchase. Wasn't too stoked on any of the rocking chair options here, so we'll be shopping around for a glider until my due date.

Thanks so much for the helpful feedback, all!

@deerylou: we got a convertible crib, but i wish we got an ikea crib! so simple and doesn't take up too much space at a great price. we ended up transferring DD directly to a twin-sized bed instead of ever using the convertible.

DS is now in DD's old crib, so maybe when he comes of age we'll switch him to a convertible first and then to a twin. but going directly to a twin has worked out so well for us, that maybe we'll do that with DS too. i'm just glad we got some more use out of the crib because we had a 2nd baby.

i really like the IKEA crib!

eta: and i lived in my glider with both kids - i use it every day, multiple times a day - for nursing, for storytime, for rocking baby to sleep... so for me, it is invaluable and i'd rather go cheap on the crib and get a glider.

@deerylou: Honestly I never used the glider! If you are not sold on having one maybe you could hold off and see how nursing goes at first in your regular furniture and bedroom? We nursed exclusively in the side-lying position after the first few weeks so the glider wouldn't have worked anyway for that purpose (DS didn't like it for rocking either).

I thought the Ikea cribs were convertible? Ours is, or one side can be removed anyway. I think the convertible cribs look kind of weird when not set up as cribs so I'd vote for the Ikea option.

I would get standard. We shopped at babies r us because my grandma bought her crib and that's where she wanted to get it from. Who am I to argue with a free crib? But I don't even think they offered standard. We have #2 on the way, and we just ordered LO a toddler bed that converts to a full bed later. We'll probably convert the crib to a toddler bed for baby #2 so we will get some use out of it.... but I hear they don't stay in toddler beds long anyway.

Ike's crib. That is what we got. You can take one side off to use as a toddler bed. A glider will be nice to have. We got one and I don't use it for feeding yet, but it is nice to rock in.

normal crib. we bought a pricey convertible for charlie, but he ended up going straight to a floor bed. olive is using the crib now so it worked out, but i would just get an ikea crib and a nice glider. we have used out glider every single day for the past 3 1/2 years!

I'd go for regular too! The ikea cribs mostly can convert a bit, too. As in. A crib sized bed, with one side of railings removed.

I would get a normal crib. Everyone I know, including me, got the convertible because it seemed like a good idea in theory. But when the time comes, you're better off putting your toddler in a regular bed and putting the baby in the crib.

@deerylou: we used the gliding motion for the first three months to get him to sleep but even now I almost always nurse him there - its been covered in spit up :/ so I'm glad (even though I always spot bot it) that it isn't a super nice piece of furniture or really expensive!

Thanks for the advice, ladies. I wasn't even sure if we were going to spring for a glider to begin with, as we have very plush living room furniture, and I imagine nursing out there, or in bed, a good majority of the time.

However, some mothers swear by the rocking/gliding, so I figure, why not?

We ended up buying a convertible crib because it was the one we liked in our budget, but I actually don't really care if it converts to a toddler bed and full size bed. I figure it costs almost the same to buy a twin bed as the conversion kit anyway sometimes. So our plan is to move this LO to a twin when baby #2 comes along (probably 2-3 years later). So I say, if you like the Ikea crib, go for it.

As for the glider, I found I really needed to sit in them and try them out, and the one I liked best actually was a lot less than some of the others, so I got lucky that way! It's not the prettiest by any means, though, so it's going to be specifically baby furniture, not like, transition to another room and keep forever. For around $300, if it's last through nursing and reading to two babies I'm happy.

I would go for the normal crib and new glider...used freaks me out especially when it comes to baby items and possible bodily fluids.

We got a convertible for DS with matching furniture and intended on that being his furniture while he lives at home. We also figured if next baby is a girl we just need a white crib because I have white whicker furniture at my parents to use with a girl....however we are still renting and DS is still co-sleeping without any interest in moving to his room, so it looms like we will be changing his toddler bed (changed it at 12 mo but he has never slept in it) back to the crib for this baby so we didn't need a convertible in the end.

Personally, we're just planning to move LO to a normal twin bed and let the baby use his crib. Even though it's convertible, I would rather get him used to a normal bed instead of doing yet another transition. So if I were you, I'd go for the normal crib and a nice glider.

We're going shopping for the last of our nursery furniture tomorrow morning (procrastinators, ahoy!), and have two options, to stay in our initial nursery budget:

Get a pricier, convertible crib, and craigslist/shop used for a glider

or

Get a standard crib (IKEA), and a new glider, in-store

We're loosely planning to TTC for # 2 in about two-three years, so we'll likely need to buy another crib if LO # 1 is using her convertible. But, if we reuse the standard crib, we'll need to buy LO # 1 a bed of her own (could also IKEA this, when the time comes).

Don't know what is preferred or more cost effective. Thoughts?
