@PurplePumps: yes, and SW charges more last minute then other carriers.

Using frequent flyer miles is usually the way to go if you or another family member has them. They are usually easiest to change, and the only way I know of occasionally getting a flight the same day or the next without paying a crazy amount.

Have you searched to see what last minute fares average? Sometimes if it is a popular route, the prices don't skyrocket last minute.

Another idea is to buy multiple one way tickets via SW and cancel the ones that come before you go into labor. This only works though if you have cash to spare and your mom would be flying again within a year (or maybe the credit lasts 2 years, I can't remember). If you cancel with SW, there's no charge, but the amount is credited under the same person's name...you can't get a full refund or transfer th credit to a different person. I did this for the birth of my nephew and it worked out well. I bought 3 outbound flights for $120 each, each separated by a couple days. I cancelled the two I didn't use and used the credit later in the year. I also booked 2 different return tickets and did the same thing.

But while it's true you don't have to pay change fees for Southwest, you would still have to pay the difference in fare if there is one, so it'd be the same as if you just bought it last minute.

My mom just came out for the birth of DD2. We had her buy two one-way tickets on southwest so that she could easily change her ticket to come here...and not have to worry about rebooking her flight home. It worked great so far and also allows her to change her return flight last minute if we had reason for her to stay longer (slow recovery on my part, issues with DD1, etc).

@sunny: LOL I thought you worked for southwest from that last paragraph but then I figured out it that you were just cutting and pasting from the website! Haha.

Try Southwest.

https://www.southwest.com/html/air/nochangefee.html

In today’s fast-paced world, things can change in a moment’s notice. That’s why here at Southwest Airlines we continue to offer maximum flexibility if you need to modify your travel plans, by not charging change fees. If you need to change an upcoming flight itinerary, you’ll only pay the cost in fare difference and will never incur a separate change fee.

Some airlines will allow you a one time date change on your ticket for a fee. I would contact the airline and ask how much the fee would be.

Not unless she wants to pay a ridiculous unrestricted airfare. Stand by applies only to flights on the same day as your ticketed flight. It would probably be more cost efficient to just buy a flight for around or a little before your due date and spend more time there before the baby is born if she can spare the time.

We are in a bit of a conundrum and I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions.

We are due in March and although we have a lot of friends who are willing to watch our son at moments notice all of them work so we are gonna need a grandparent to be able to hop a flight and swoop in as soon as possible. I'm wondering what options we might have for this. My MIL lives on Denver a 2.5 hour flight away and it's a hub so there should be a lot of flights. Is there a way that she can buy a ticket that she can use anytime?
