I know this is from Buzzfeed, but it just happened to be the most recent thing I'd seen:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/10-potential-mass-shootings-that-were-stopped-by-someone-wit

This is why people carry guns. Because there are crazy people that don't listen to "no-gun" rules. Should we also post signs that say "No Murdering"?

Whenever big chains make statements like this I feel like someone somehow thinks they're going to make money by being on the "correct" side of an issue. I guess it could be different, I really don't know...

I agree with @loveisstrange in that the people to be worried about are the unlicensed people..who probably don't give a damn about a Starbucks almost-policy.

@looch: I'm in North Carolina where we have the right to conceal with a permit, up until about a month ago we couldn't take them into anywhere that you had to pay to get into (movies, theme parks, etc,) anywhere that served alcohol, any school/government building/property or anywhere where it was posted saying no weapons allowed.

They passed a bill so now you can take them anywhere that it isn't posted, other than INSIDE a school/government building..they are allowed on the property (inside your car) but they cannot be ON you in those buildings..concealed or not.

A place allowing guns doesn't draw us to it, it just tells us weather DH needs to take his gun off or not :P I think the Starbucks thing got a little more attention than they wanted so they're trying to say "Guns are welcome, but that doesn't mean we are asking everyone with a gun to show up armed".

@loveisstrange: It's true. The people who are licensed to carry aren't usually the one's to worry about.

My husband and I have concealed licenses, but I don't think we've ever carried into an establishment, other than maybe a convenience store and hotel here and there. I don't know why Starbucks opened their mouth, honestly. I wouldn't care either way, as I have no intentions of carrying into a coffee shop. Though, hipsters can be awfully fierce, I guess. :)

@Danizaur: DH & I also both have our concealed carry permits & take it very seriously.

Perhaps a lot of it has to do with being in a very military heavy area but seeing guns doesn't phase me. It's the non law abiding citizens that scare me. That, and having a policy isn't going to stop a non law/rule abiding person from bringing a gun into an establishment.

We check policies of new places all the time. DH has his concealed license so we always make sure we are in the right when we go places, otherwise we leave the gun in the car. At first I thought it was silly to take a gun everywhere when DH first expressed his desire to get his license, but anymore I'm thankful he has it. You never know what will happen at an innocent trip to the movies, unfortunately.

I don't mind if places allow guns. DH had to go through a long and hard process to obtain his and there are tons of rules and regulations about being able to carry. Not just anyone can get one. And even if they do, we are protected! :)

Just so everyone is aware, every state now has some sort of carry law in place (Illinois has a law but won't start issuing permits for a few more months). If you ever leave your house, you have probably been in a building with someone carrying a firearm.

I guess they were OK with allowing guns but now that it's gotten too much attention they're sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place? If they now say no guns they'll be bothering pro-gun customers but if they say guns are allowed they will be bothering anti-gun customers. Either way they'll lose customers.

Lame. Starbucks should either ban them completely or keep the policy as is. I am personally very uncomfortable around guns so if I was in a Starbucks and got a glimpse of a customers gun on their hip I would avoid that store--but in NYC it would only be someone in law enforcement.

@looch: there was a terrible picture going around after sandy hook that was suggesting that schools should have signs warning that teachers are armed. the thought of guns in schools is terrifying to me. i cannot wrap my head around why anyone would think it would be appropriate to bring a firearm into a school.

i think because where i live in an urban area and there aren't animals being hunted, i have different views of guns vs someone who lives on a ranch where an animal might attack your livestock. it wouldn't occur to me that someone would have or need a gun in starbucks. i would leave if i knew someone in a coffee shop with me had a gun, i've never been near guns, other than police officers carrying them, and they make me very uncomfortable.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yea... and really I don't know anyone that carries that would come in & place their gun on the table or anything... it may be on their hip where it could possibly be seen but for the most part the majority of the population is none the wiser. Maybe they noticed an increase in service so they put the two together. lol

@looch: There are establishments you cannot carry like places that sell alcohol, schools, courthouses, airports, etc... for these places you have to be an officer to carry.

The one thing I would like to know, is in conceal and carry states, can you bring a firearm into any public establishment, or are there limits? Could a parent bring a gun into a school, if they are going for a parent/teacher conference?

Hmmmm... I think it's a bit wishy washy... why would you go on record that you welcome carrying your firearm on the premises & then go back asking that individuals not carry them b/c it's "not part of the *said establishments* experience"..... last I recall a person legally carrying their firearm generally has nothing to do with their shopping/dining/outing experience but about them exercising their right to do so & protection. lol

First let me say, I didn't know retail companies had policies on firearms. Well, Starbucks is on record stating customers are welcome in their stores with their guns in conceal and carry states. Gun organizations caught wind of this and have asked their members to show Starbucks a little love and visit their local shop. Starbucks response was to ask, not ban, gun owners to leave their guns at home since guns are not part of the Starbucks experience. The CEO was quoted saying there is not a ban because he doesn't want to put his employees in the position of asking someone with a firearm to leave.

Guns are everywhere. Would you like to know store policies on firearms? Will this change where you shop, spend your money?

I am so curious about all of this and now will go buy a brownie at Starbucks.
