@Maysprout: Oh, poor little sweetie! DD always acts up much worse when she's sick or teething. :) Congrats on the first tooth! And boo on the first tantrums, lol.

She's cutting her first tooth!
It just broke through her gum but it's not all the way out yet. She's been more difficult than usual this week and I guess at this point I'd figured she'd always be toothless, ha, so I hadn't even checked that as a reason.

At that age, what worked for us was offering hugs and cuddles with a very brief explanation of what was happening (e.g. "Do you need a hug? I see you're angry because mommy took the keys away). Then, distract her with something else (e.g. "Let's go play with your blocks, instead!"). Distraction and redirection are great tools for this age, and they're usually pretty effective.

Lo is 9 months and does that too when she's upset. Usually its something she wants but cant have, like my glasses or phone. Now I just distract her and give her something else.

So baby girl has just started throwing tantrums. Not horrible ones and they don't happen often but they seem more like tantrums - 'I know what I want and I'm pissed that I can't have it RIGHT NOW' than just baby tears. I want to get started on the right foot with how to handle them but I'm not really sure what the right foot is. I usually check the situation out to make sure it's just a fit and she's not actually hurt and then ignore it. Sometimes she stops on her own and sometimes it takes some hugs. I was reading Harvey Karps 'happiest toddler on the block' and I feel like everything in there is a bit early for us, LO just turned 11 months so talking/reasoning/giving choices doesn't have much affect on her yet.
