He slept for an hour and 10 mins and didn’t wake up crying like yesterday  I picked him up and was like “did you have a good nap?” and he was all smiles

@2littlepumpkins: @cake2017: Thanks for your responses. They really help. I’m struggling doing this training bc I can’t handle watching him cry. Anyways, day 2 is better. He cried for 20mins when I put him in the crib, then I changed his diaper bc he pooped, put him back in, he cried for 10 and went back to sleep. He’s been sleeping almost an hour! Yesterday he was crying for half hour or more. I know today (so far) is an improvement but I’m hoping things just get better from here bc my heart can’t take this!

@MsBAM: Yes, he sleeps in his crib without being held. My LO is the same age. My goal was slightly different- I wanted him to sleep in his own room and crib. I still nurse to sleep. He knows how to get himself back to sleep in the middle of the night. I only get up twice at certain times I picked to nurse him. I don’t want to wean yet.

I nurse, burp and he goes down sometimes asleep or drowsy. His first nap is usually the longest and then the other 2 are 30/45 mins or an hour long.

I did CIO as well and the first couple of days were rough. I cried, wore headphones or just took a shower so i didn’t hear. This was for bedtime. I tried CIO with checks but he didn’t like that. So once he went to sleep I would go back in and check on him.

It gets better. I actually played in his crib during the training making it a positive place. That helped a lot. I also tell him what is going on and that I will be back. Bedtime routine is crucial and helped with the naps cause he knows the difference.

Naps/bedtime took about a week and half. He cried after that but it was whining for 10 mins.

He cries sometimes for naps too so not everyday is perfect. Overall, he’s doing okay. Better at bedtime but he naps too. Don’t be discouraged it sounds like he will catch on soon!

@MsBAM: So not quite the same but I did night CIO with my 16 month old (way back when..like four years ago!) and the first two nights she kept getting up and crying like 45 mins at a time...and then the third night I think it was like ten mins, and then the fourth night she got up, whined, and put herself back to sleep. So even if it seems like you're making no progress at all that's not necessarily the case. You have to weigh whether the sleep is more needed and if it's worth it just keep trying. Something I did with my second child was to hold him even when he was crying in his crib. I would lean over the crib. He was very little when I started this but he was able to put himself to sleep early on. (He didn't sttn til late though, so who knows if it worked.)

Good luck!

@gotkimchi: thanks! Do you think this will help with his night time sleep? I know nap and bedtime use different parts of the brain. He goes to bed awake so that’s no issue. Still gets up several times a night though (haven’t started weaning yet).

@gotkimchi: wow that’s fast! I let him cry for up to 35 minutes today. Is that too long? Maybe I should do twenty minute intervals...

@MsBAM: my older prob was done by day 3 mostly, my younger day 2. I still generally do the same thing, put them down give them 20 min. If they’re crying or just up I get them and repeat in 1 hour.

@gotkimchi: Thats so good to hear after a hard day of listening to the crying. I was starting to doubt myself. I’m hoping to see at least some improvement tomorrow but he’s so used to nursing to sleep for naps I’m afraid tomorrow will be a repeat of today.

Hi all,

I’ve started nap training my 7mo old today. It’s so hard. First nap he cried half hour and didn’t fall asleep. We took a break and tried an hour later. He then cried 35 mins on the second attempt but fell asleep and slept almost 40mins.

Second nap of day he cried 30mins and didn’t fall asleep. Took a break and 30 mins later trying again bc I know he’s tired. He’s been crying 10min so far and I feel so bad.

Please tell me it will get better soon.... how long till I see a change?
