That Italian Easter egg sounds amazing!

We did the Easter egg hunt at that age and I put duplos inside the eggs (instead of candy). Also we read Easter themed board books beforehand. And of course she got an Easter basket.

Now that my kiddo is a bit older, we dye eggs (I think we started that tradition the next year, at around 2.5 years) and bake Easter cookies to bring to our families. We also usually have cinnamon buns for breakfast that morning (that is our tradition for Christmas too).

The first Easter DS was only 8 months old so I put a book and some puffs in his basket. Last year he got some toys and treats. He will be 2.5 this Easter so we will try to dye some eggs. Not sure if we will hide any eggs or his basket this year but he will get a chocolate bunny, book and some jelly beans.

Thanks to everyone for sharing what you do! I’m glad to hear that the magic of egg dying is best left to older kids. I look forward to a toddler-style Easter where we will probably have 17 Easter egg “hunts” with eggs hidden in the same places.

Since DH will obviously weigh in on how he would like to do Easter with LO, today at brunch we started talking about our memories of Easter traditions as kids. He grew up in Italy where they didn’t and don’t have Easter eggs hunts or baskets. He remembers getting an olive branch at mass on the Sunday before (like the palm that some give here). And then Good Friday, no meat. And then Easter Sunday, after mass and family lunch, he got his egg. If you’ve never seen an Italian Easter egg, it’s a hollow chocolate egg (think like the Kinder eggs but much bigger) and inside there is a stuffed animal or a lego-type toy. Oh and the chocolate is so good!!!! After talking about it, we ordered one for DS (and us). ☺️

we typically do an easter egg hunt around our house/yard (with treats hidden in the eggs), a basket with a few small gifts/treats, and then a dinner, sometimes with family. oh, and we decorate eggs.

@Amorini: Totally secular as I was raised Jewish and DW is agnostic. First year he was four months so I tossed some pacis and little toys in an Easter basket. Last year we had moved to a new house that week so it was chaos and we got him some little plastic cars and bunny ears for his basket. This year he’s almost 2.5 and understands more so we’re doing an egg hunt with his little toddler friends and I got some fun stuff for his basket. That’s about it!!

We hide the kids Easter baskets and they have to find them when they wake up. We did this growing up and my dad got really into the hiding. He still hides them for 2 of my brothers who are in college.

We have also started going to our vacation home in the mountains for Easter weekend. I never had a specific location for holidays growing up, so I am really enjoying the consistency of this. So much so that this will be our second year flying across the country for Easter.

We also do an Easter egg hunt and a big lunch with ham.

We usually do a community egg hunt a week or two before Easter and then hide eggs around the house on Easter morning (though we probably started that when my son was 2). We also go to a restaurant after church on Easter Sunday for brunch where they have someone dressed up as the Easter bunny and my son has loved it. We usually go to my parents house for Easter dinner and my sister usually makes a lamb cake. It became a joke in our house and the lamb cake now makes appearances at baby showers, Christmas dinners, engagement parties, etc (always dressed for the current holiday/event).

Before Easter we’ll go on an egg hunt at our community park and the grandparents will take DS1 (almost 3) to a mall to ride a train and see the bunny, but I’m sure he’ll refuse to sit on his lap. We’ll also dye eggs this year.

On Easter morning we go to mass, then at outback house have a little egg and basket hunt and then have our families over for brunch.

Regarding when to celebrate: Easter starts on Easter Sunday, or Saturday night, if you do a vigil. Before then is Lent. If you want to extend the Easter celebration, the time to do that is after Easter Sunday, not before.

18 months at his first Easter. He just got an Easter basket with treats and toys and bunny ears. We went to church in a cute outfit and that was pretty much it.

2.5 he had an egg hunt at school, we visited a community Easter event the Saturday before Easter Sunday where they had all sorts of carnival type things to look at. We did Easter basket inn Sunday morning and church. We did an Easter egg hunt at home after nap and had a ham dinner with all the trimmings. Dessert was an “empty tomb” cake. It was just a small sheet cake with a hollowed out dome of cake on top and a chocolate egg as the tombstone that was rolled away.

I’ve decided empty tomb cake or resurrection cake is going to be our thing for Easter so DS1 will help make it this year. DH likes hot cross buns so perhaps this year we will add those too.

We just did an Easter egg hunt the first year. Plastic eggs with a chocolate one hidden in them. We practiced once or twice to find eggs during the week. That was when she was 15 months old. This year we’re doing a low key clue Easter egg hunt and a bigger present at the end. That’s what my Easters were like when I was little. Usually we just celebrate and do the fun Easter egg hunt in the Sunday.

We celebrate as a family just on Easter Sunday. Though we do the eggs a few days before, and the weekend before we go to a big Easter egg hunt at a local park.
At 18 months though we didn’t do anything but give him an Easter basket with some candy and small gifts. I suppose we could have done a super easy egg hunt (like didn’t actually hide them, just laid them around the room). But I didn’t think of it at the time.

Last year he was 2.5 and here’s what we did.
- dyed eggs a few days before. But he wasn’t very interested and honestly he wasn’t coordinated enough so it was stressful for me. This year may be better.
- egg hunt with Easter bunny weekend before followed by brunch

Easter Sunday:
- wake up and do egg and basket hunt right away
- fun breakfast like cinnamon rolls
- church
- lunch at home (bigger than usual - eggs, bacon, etc)
- nice dinner (though I have a newborn added to the mix this year so I think we’ll just order in or go out).

DS will be about 18 months once Easter rolls around and I would like to start doing some fun, secular Easter traditions. I would love to know what your families do and what fun stuff you do with your littles.

When I was very young, we had Easter egg baskets, Easter egg hunts, and dying eggs. It was mostly a religious holiday for my family and I think at one point, my parents didn’t want us to associate it with the Easter bunny anymore.

Anyway, so I can’t remember details and when it all happens, in order to do some fun stuff for DS. Also, is it something to celebrate all week or just on Easter Sunday?
