A lot of it seems to depend on the individual baby. When my son was in the infant class two 10-12 month olds joined and one adjusted immediately without an issue. The other one cried for what seemed like a month straight. The teachers didn't do anything differently but their personalities seemed to adapt and respond differently. My advice would be to see about bringing your LO in for an hour or two at a time where you can be there too the week or so before you start so you can help them see that it is a fun, good space rather than a scary, new place. When you do drop off, try not to stay and make the leaving process drawn out. I've watched a number of babies cry and cry and cry until mom or dad is gone and then the waterworks cease.

@Mrsbells: that doesn't sound too bad. Hopefully, LO won't be too stuck in his ways and will be able to adjust just as quickly.

@NerdBee: She was only 12 weeks when she started, but she adjusted fully within a month or two

@Bluebonnet: Thanks! Another great idea! I don't know the schedule but I can ask for one. I do know that many of the infants there are on one nap a day already but I don't think LO will be ready for only one nap a day at 11 months. The daycare director said that they will work wih me to transitiOn him to one nap.

@Mrsbells: thanks! It's good to know that your LO adapted to a different routine at daycare. How long did it take for her to adapt to the new routine?

LO was not good at napping or bottle feeding. Yes I worried about it constantly but babies adapt very fast and she did. She has a her own routine at daycare and it works for her

@NerdBee: We usually move his bedtime up because he is tired from not napping well at daycare. He also falls asleep in the car on the way home. It has no effect on his ability to STTN. He tends to sleep a lot more on the weekends or the days I stay home with him. I'm not sure if he's "making up sleep or not."

Keep in mind that LO's daycare teachers have transitioned lots of infants to daycare, so they can help with the transition.

Do you have a copy of the schedule for LO's classroom? You could help LO adjust by getting on that schedule (if possible).

@littlek: Thanks! I didn't think to ask daycare if we could bring in a white noise machine.

Does your LO's bad naps affect his night sleep? Do you make up for the bad daycare naps with longer naps on the weekend or earlier bedtime?

My Lo is sensitive to overtiredness and will fight bedtime and have early wake ups when overtired :(

LO was a very good napper at home but his sleep suffers at daycare. Have you talked to the daycare about bringing in your white noise machine? We brought LO sleep giraffe and that kinda helps him. As for eating, LO has no issues eating for anyone so that wasn't a problem for us.

My mat leave will be over at the beginning of April and LO will be starting daycare in mid-March at about 11 months. We've developed some good routines over the past 9 months and I'm worried that he will not transition well. I'm also wondering if there is anything I can do in the next couple of months to help make the transition smoother.

Did your LO nap well? We have a solid nap routine at home and he sleeps with white noise. At daycare, he will be sleeping in a room with other babies and I did not see any white noise machine in the room. I'm worried that he will not want to nap due to the other babies and different environment.

Did your LO eat well? LO takes bottles now but he does not eat as well for anyone else, including his dad. Is there anything I can do to help him transition or will he just adapt over time?

I'm feeling a little nervous over this whole thing. Please share your experiences and any tips you may have to help make the transition to daycare for an older infant smoother. Thanks!
