Even though they get a little slimy, my LO has loved banana and avocado so far. I give him pretty big pieces that he can hold onto and gum.

@shopaholic: Awwww - yes she is. :) My LO is 13 months and still a wee one to me! And I think we started with puffs/yogurt melts right around then too . . . LO did well with puffs, but it took her a while to like the yogurt melts! Don't get discouraged if your LO seems to reject a lot of food(s) . . . it can take many many (many!) times introducing a new food before she may try anything new (my Ped said it can take around 15 tries before a LO will accept new foods . . . I wish I had known that earlier!).

@shopaholic: have fun! If she's not ready shell just spit it out probably :) and the pieces are small enough that if she swallows them whole, no biggie (although you will probably find chunks in her diaper!)

You may also want to try things that are easily dissolvable like yogurt melts and puffs . . . it will help her develop her pincer grab, and get her used to texture in her mouth. Puffs/yogurt melts are sometimes easier for LOs to pick up (not wet/slippery/etc.).

@hilsy85: Oh! Thanks for these tips! So far, she will gum (is that like scraping?) the apple and green beans. I will try cutting the carrots into Cheerios sized today and see how that goes! :)

My ped told us to make the pieces the same size as your pinky nail when they're first starting off. I'd do ripe fruits and maybe pieces of cheese? Anything that dissolves fairly easily.

Have you tried banana? Xander had pretty decent success with that. Though we haven't tried anything else, so I don't have much advice.

Really ripe fruit was the first thing I did as finger foods, like mushy banan, ripe peaches, etc. I squished the pices between my fingers to make sure he could gum them. However I only started finger foods once I noticed he was making chewing motions with his jaws while eating purees.

I made the pieces Cheerios sized.

I don't think K likes purees much. She is happy to gnaw on solid foods (though not biting or swallowing yet). I've given her little bits of steamed green beans, cold celery, cold cucumbers, avocado, and apple so far. She doesn't chew, bite off pieces, or swallow really yet.

What kinds of stuff can I give or make for her to slowly get her to actually eat the stuff? The closest she got were the steamed green beans, but she spit it all back up, plus some milk. :/ I'm steaming tiny carrots at the moment for her to try.

Ideas and suggestions? How big should I make pieces so she doesn't choke?
