@littlebug: Good luck! L's 6 month appointment isn't for another month, grgh.

I also asked daycare to make sure they aren't feeding him after 5 pm, so that he isn't full from a bottle when I get home.

@lindseykaye: that's pretty much our schedule, except we get home about 5:45 so I nurse him right when we get home. I'm scared to not nurse to sleep too, ha!

I also started giving LO solids in the evenings without keeping up with her normal nursing schedule we had prior but it has worked out for us just fine. There just really isn't enough time between her arrival home and bedtime for us to nurse, feed solids, do bathtime, and nurse again before sleep.
I suppose I could switch up the nursing and solids (which I should probably do so that she can start to dissassociate nursing from sleeping) but I am scared to give up what works!
In our house,
3:45-4:30 last bottle at daycare (sometime in this range)
6:15 - 6:30 LO and Dad arrive home from daycare
6:45 Solids
7:00 Bathtime
7:15-7:30 Nurse to sleep
So, LO isn't going more than 3 hours without food and even if she gets her last bottle at the beginning of the window and nurses at the end of that time frame it's not too long.

We started solids at little before 6 months with just a dinner meal at home. Then around 7 months started sending purees for LO to have one meal a day at daycare, after her mid-day bottle. She now at 8 months+ has started getting food in the AM after her first bottle also and gets some puffs in the late afternoon.

@dagret: Thanks! D is the only infant at daycare these days, so I think he tends to hang out with the older kids quite a bit. So I'm not sure how they'll handle it. I'm waiting to talk to our pediatrician on Monday and then we'll talk to daycare about it on Tuesday based on what she suggests.

This is the stuff they never tell you about!

@littlebug: wanted to add that at L's daycare, they feed the babies in a big group. So I talked to them today about when the best time to do solids during the day would be. We came to the consensus that "lunch" - they start at 11 - would probably be best. So if I time his morning bottle around 7:15-7:30, he should probably get a bottle shortly before he gets solids there.

@littlebug: don't feel like an idiot! Almost every time I post a question I feel like I already knew the answer, but it's good to hear other people's experiences. It's like when you're trying to think of the name of an actor or movie and have to ask someone and then you're like "arg, I *knew* that!!" :)

@littlebug: don't feel like an idiot--you wouldn't have written the question if your mommy instinct hadn't been kicking in making you think that you should nurse him first!

even knowing the "nursing/bottle first" rule and hearing it from my pediatrician, i've fed LO a little puree to distract/calm him when he wakes up early and cranky from a nap before nursing. i feel a little guilty, but i think we'll all be okay.

@highwire: Yeah her day care teachers always snuggle her when they feed her and LO rarely has a bottle at home so she hasn't had much opportunity to do it herself.

@allison: We have the Tripp Trapp so it doesn't recline but I'll try the bouncy seat if I can get her to stay in it! Thanks : )

@MamaMoose: it's easier if you can recline the high chair or put LO in a bouncy seat--something that's reclined. Makes it easier for them to tilt the bottle up enough.

@MamaMoose: She's only been able to do it well enough that I can just hand it off and she drinks it for a couple of weeks. They were really adamant about her learning at daycare (even though I wasn't a huge fan) but now it is convenient for me that she knows how ;)

@highwire: Not to thread jack but when did C learn to give herself the bottle? M knows what her bottle is and she puts it in her mouth and tries to suck but she hasn't figured out that she has to lift it up and tilt it in her mouth.

Thanks, all. I feel like such an idiot. I mean, I know that at this age solids are not for nutritional purpose, so I should have known better than to stop the nursing session. Duh...

And I guess we'll start sending solids to daycare, too. He gets a bottle at 9:30, 12, and 4:30, and naps from 1-3. I guess I'll have them give him solids after that noon bottle?

Yep - keep the nursing session at 615!

I do a bottle at that time instead of nursing, so she feeds herself the bottle in the high chair and is still getting the nourishment but I am free to prepare dinner.

Until a year solids are supposed to be in addition to breastmilk, not as a replacement. So you should keep all nursing sessions the same. We started solids at six month and then after a few weeks we added a second session in the morning. So now at 7 months she normally wakes up and nurses at 6:30, gets a bottle at day care at 9:30, eats purees at 11, gets a bottle at 12:30, gets a bottle at 3:30, eats purees when we get home at 5, nurses at 6:30/7 and then goes to bed and nurses once during the night.

hey littlebug, we just started solids also! my pediatrician advised us that, at least at the beginning, offer the solids after breastmilk/formula. since they're only just learning how to "eat", it can be considered a "p.s." to their real meal of bm/formula.

we just sent our first bowl of oatmeal cereal + tahini to daycare today. i have no idea what my husband told them at drop-off (i didn't want to micromanage and had already told him a bunch of other stuff to do). but when i pick LO up today today i will tell the daycare staff only to offer solids after a bottle feeding for now.

I'm not super strict about it, but nursing before solids is the general advice I got. I sent purées to daycare at 6 months and he did drop a bottle, so I asked them to make sure he drank before eating so he wouldn't drop anymore.

We started solids at the same age as you and I would nurse, give solids, & nurse again during our bedtime routine. Try it out and see if it makes him less cranky :)

D is about 5.5 months, and we're just starting solids. He sits in his high chair with us at dinner and gets some purees - he usually "eats" about an ounce before he's done, but he is usually still hungry afterwards. What usually ends up happening is he eats with us, then about 30 minutes later it's bedtime, so he nurses and goes to bed. But for that 30 minute between, he's kind of pissy cuz he's still hungry. Should I nurse him before he gets the solids? I'm a little confused on how to handle that.

FWIW, prior to solids, our schedule in the evening was this: pickup at daycare around 5:45, get home and empty/refill wetbag, and then nurse (start eating around 6:15). Then it's playtime and hanging out until bedtime (around 7:30), when we go up, bath, massage, nurse, bed. He was usually asleep by 8-8:15. Now I'm not nursing him when we get home. Instead he hangs out with me in the kitchen while I cook dinner, then we eat as a family around 7. So...should I still nurse him at 6:15?

My other question is when did you start sending solids to daycare? And did you tell them to bottlefeed baby first then give the solids, or vice-versa?
