My LO spit up a lot more frequently (he's a spitter anyway) after eating mango as well. I think I read somewhere that citrus fruit is a little rough on their little developing bellies and I want to say that mango is considered a citrus. I could be way off base on that though.

@JoJoGirl: You're not a bad mom at all! The only way you'll find out if your LO is allergic to something is if you try it!

LO developed hives all over his face after I gave him a piece of scrambled egg. I'm not sure that an allergic reaction can be that fast (barfing immediately after getting it), but someone else who actually has a medical background might be able to better comment on that. Not sure my Accounting degree will cut it

Thanks all. She seems okay I think. Can't tell if her lips are swollen cause they're already so small!

My LO broke out in red hives all over from eating mashed up avocados. She was eating so well too and I got so excited since avocado is a super nutritious food element. Then red spots started to appear and got worse by bath time without any other allergic reaction like vomiting or wheezing. She was trying to scratch at the red spots but doesn't have good hand coordination (5.5 months) yet so she ended up pinching herself. She settled after a warm bath but was super fussy during her sleep.

My LO's only allergic reaction manifested itself as a cough/respiratory distress. No vomiting or rash.
Egg allergy was confirmed via blood test.

I didn't know mango was common allergen either. We are awaiting the results of a blood test to determine allergens for my LO. For us, it manifested itself as a rash. Right now there is a strong chance she is allergic to egg even though she's never had it. I have been eating it, and her exposure to it through my breast milk may be triggering an allergic reaction.

Wow! I had no idea that mango was a common allergen! I looooove mango. We've tried a few spoonfuls before but she didn't seem interested, so I didn't push it. I hope she takes a good nap & feels better.

I know mango is common, BUT, i will say that E barfed up really big a few days ago when she ate a piece of sweet potato. I think it hit her gag reflex just the right way as it was going down. Cuz it spewed out like crazy.

What if you started with orange vegetables instead? That was what my ped recommended (carrots, butternut squash, sweet potato, pumpkin).

@JoJoGirl: you're not a bad mommy! I didn't know until I turned up allergic either! I always ate mangos as a kid and my family wasn't worried about it, it was a later-in-life onset allergy. I'd watch her lips/mouth particularly though in the next day or so. I get blisters that look like cold sore blisters sort of when I eat something with mango in it. They go away generally in 3-4 days.

I would give it a rest and try again in a few days as well, doesn't necessarily mean she's allergic to it! It might have just gone down the wrong pipe (since she coughed before).

@scg00387: Such a bummer :( I didn't realize it was so common! I'm allergic to most tree fruits (apples, peaches, pears, plums, nectarines) so we can't give her any of that stuff until she's at least old enough to talk and tell us "my throat itches" or whatever (my first reaction). So sad seeing her turn into exorcist child! She hasn't even been sick yet :-/

I don't know about babies and allergies but I'm allergic to mango too (it is the ONLY food I'm allergic to) and I know that it is a pretty common one. It is also related to the poison ivy plant... I think that has something to do with it being more prone to cause allergies?

@JoJoGirl: oh no!! We haven't had this happenbuy I know mango is a somewhat common allergen, a lot of people react to touching the skin too. I'd probably just avoid it and wait a day or two to try anything else new.

I pureed a little frozen mango this morning to give LO for the first time - all she's had so far is banana and avocado (she'll be 6 months on Wednesday).

She took two spoonfuls, coughed a couple of times, then had the biggest, smelliest, grossest big-girl barf I have ever seen.. all over herself, me, the chair, the floor... poor kid :( Unfortunately I had to put her down for a nap ~30 minutes later but I am watching her like a hawk on the monitor.

Is this what food allergies looked like for your LOs? I don't think I need to call the ped, just avoid giving her mango again for a long time, right? So scary :(
