We mostly did homemade at home, and store-bought jars or pouches on the go. I have to say, the whole phase with starting solids was so stressful - not knowing if they'll like the food or I'll have to eat most of it :silly: , the messes, the worrying if they're getting enough nutrition once they start drinking less milk, all that. But the bit with making the food was really easy, just boiling the food till it's soft enough to mash, then mashing it with a small fork.

@agold: we just used our blender to make purees. I would make a big batch and store it in mini jars in the freezer. Wholesome baby food has great guidance on which foods are good to start with.

My LO was not picky. He really enjoyed Beech Nut purées. https://www.beechnut.com/ Stage 1 were all the single fruit or veggies and Stage 2 was the same consistency as 1, but a mix of flavors. If I had to do it all again I would quickly rule out food allergies and spend more time on Stage 2.

I used Yumi for my second and it was FANTASTIC. It was pricey but way more variety than I would have ever made on my own. I would highly recommend doing a trial, in particular their blends were great and tasted really good

@avivoca: Same!!

With both girls I did purees for a few weeks and more or less moved onto BLW style. We always made small batches of purees ourselves (ok not we, DH) and supplemented with an organic/natural store brand here & there (totally blanking on the brand).

@KT326: oh the glories of being a stay at home mom. :silly:

@snarkybiochemist: thank you! I have a stick blender. I'm really going to look into doing this.

@agold: I can't help with the picky eater thing as E is only 11.5 months and still fairly flexible but I can chime in on making your own food. I did it using a combo of my stick blender and mini food processor. I would mostly steam veggies in a steamer basket or in the microwave until tender and then blend up with the appropriate amount of water or breast milk to get the texture I needed. I would then pop the puree into an ice cube tray which is approx 1oz and freeze. I would pop out however many cubes I needed and heat. I would make a few batches in bulk and I found it to be easy. It was great for me since E hated super super thin purees but only needed single food purees when we started obviously and stage 2 or 3 usually is blended or over textured for her.

@agold: It's really easy to make your own, I'm just too lazy! The jars are so convenient, especially for daycare. I've roasted sweet potatoes and squash, then just threw it in the blender with a little water. Avocado is easy to mash. I've done apples in the slow cooker to make applesauce.

I have a friend that is a stay at home mom and she would make hers ahead of time and freeze them in ice cube trays.

@KT326: @shabang: @avivoca: Thanks for telling me that my second child may not be doomed! I was just putting feelers out for delivery service experiences. But it may be too expensive for me to consider.

@KT326: I may look for single ingredient things, or, yikes, look into making my own baby food.

I don't think my kids are picky eaters but they definitely go through phases. My oldest will love yogurt for awhile and then hate it. Same with a lot of other foods. My almost 2 year old still eats pretty much whatever I put in front of him but I can tell he is starting to have preferences.

I think the best thing you can do is just offer a variety of food and keep offering it even if they don't eat it.

As far as baby food, we mostly just bought the organic stuff at the store. I tried to find things with the fewest ingredients. For my second, he started eating table foods a lot sooner than my first. I would just cut things up really small or mash it.

I haven't tried delivery services but just wanted to reassure you that we started foods the exact same way with our two, and the first will eat anything and the second is super picky. So it may not be anything you did or do differently this time around.

My first was a picky eater and my second eats whatever you put in front of her. So you're not doomed to having two picky eaters.

I've never heard of baby food delivery services. We just bought ours at the store.

Do any of you have any good tips on starting your baby on solids? Has anyone tried a baby food delivery service that you can recommend?

I am about to start giving my solids to my second baby, so I feel funny asking for tips. But my first girl is a picky eater and I'm hoping to do better for my second girl.
