@SeptMomma12: I remember we were both going through this, and right in the thick of it at the same time. M still has horrible reflux. The pediatrician said we can start solids anytime after 4 months, but not in relation to the reflux. I asked her what about exclusive breastmilk or formula until six months recommendation, and she kind of shrugged. I'm back at work, and M has less reflux from the bottle. So, we are trying to hold off until 6 months.

@winniebee: @LAZB: Yes, I definitely think the spit up is somewhat related to nursing. She still spits up a lot with bottles but nowhere near what she does with nursing. And I notice she spits up less at night when I have considerably less milk.

DD has reflux, so we started doing cereal in her bottles around 4.5 months and tried feeding her cereal around the same time, but she was not good at eating from a spoon for quite a while. The cereal in the bottle was very helpful for her spitting up issues, I definitely notice her spitting up much more when she drinks from the boob rather than from a bottle.

Following... DS is only 6 weeks old but has severe reflux (on Nexium, Zantac and Carafate)... he is EBF and I really do not want to start solids before 6m. His GI doctor seems to think that by the time he is sitting up more the reflux will be getting better. I hope so!

We started solids at 5 months, but it really didn't do anything for spit up. She didn't grow out of that until around 10-11 months. Just to say this, though - reflux and spit up aren't necessarily the same thing, especially if the spitting up isn't bothering her. My kid grew out of reflux by around 4 months, after rounds of meds and being uncomfortable with feedings, but the spitting up continued even after she was well established on solids. Usually after 6 months, as their systems mature, the spitting up does begin to reduce significantly, but I don't think solids will make a difference.

We started solids at 4 months but it wasn't more than 1-2 teaspoons at a sitting. He did much better eating around 5.5 months which is ironically when he stopped needing Prevacid and I went off dietary restrictions at 6 months. Don't know if it's coincidence but worked for us. I would stay away from rice cereal and do oatmeal instead mixed with fruit - the rice alone was quite constipating at first.

My reflux babies had a rough time with solids as well. They spit up less but dealt with painful silent reflux at night after eating solids. We ended up having to put solids on pause for several months at the suggestion of the GI dr. Once we figured out a better med (Prilosec) around 12 months we could do solids again. So for us, solids were not helpful in eliminating reflux!

Your daughter sounds similar in spit up volume to my now 10 month old, who was a TORRENTIAL spitter upper. He was on Zantac though b/c he did have reflux symptoms from 6 weeks on (weaned from meds at 8m). Our GI doctor had suggested cereal in bottle (old school, but very effective for reflux) so around 4 months I started doing that for whatever bottles he did get. He also suggested starting solids at 5 months and was convinced that as my son got into solids the spit up would slow down.

We did start solids at 5 months but honestly it just resulted in spitting up puree too and it didn't seem to help the spit up. My son was very interested in table food so we started BLW at 6 months and that's when the spit up started to slow just ever so slightly. It wasn't until 7 months when he was really pounding solids that the spit up slowed a considerable amount. By 8 months he only spit up a few times a day and by 9 months it was maybe once a day, but he really backed off nursing by then. At 10 months he spits up usually only a few times a week. AMEN!

As a side note, I think part of R's problem was developmental but I think he also just overate. The way he attacks solids and water is with such zest that I now know that he just loves to eat. So he thought breastfeeding was an all day affair. He ate every 2 ish hours until 7 months when he finally went 2.5/3 and then at 8 months was at 3....9 months was at 4....and now at 10 months we're down to 5 feedings.

Hang in there, the vomit days will soon pass!

My reflux baby did not take well to solids (the gag reflex is strong and they may have texture aversions). We started at 6 months and he would not take solids really at all until he was somewhere around 9.5 months old. I've heard that this is often the case with reflux kiddos.

My plan for DD has always been to EBF until 6 months and then introduce solids. But she's almost 5 months and the spit up is out of control. Like all day, every day. She's a happy spitter at least, but it's obviously still not optimal. She's a very mobile baby and basically spends all day rolling in vomit  The doctor suggested we might want to try cereal a little early to see if that helps. Anyone have any experience with this? Did it help?
