My son is about to be 9 months and has similar reactions. What I'm doing is gradually introducing chunkier and chunkier purees. I tried cottage cheese and it totally wigged him out, so I scaled back to slightly less chunky solids. Then I keep offering bites of larger chunks here and there till he doesn't gag.

I also bought puffs and melts to have him practice pincher / self feeding. He LOVES the taste of the melts (they are fruit/yogurt melts but they are sweet)- I put the first one in his mouth, and now he knows he likes them, so it motivates him to try. Plus, though they are solid, they dissolve pretty fast too, which helps.

My impression is that it's not unusual for kids to spit out food when they are learning to chew and swallow. (It took both of my kids a couple of months to get to the point of chewing and swallowing. Before that, they went through periods of ignoring food, just picking it up, chewing and spitting out. My daughter _just_ started getting into her food at 9 months.)

For me, I felt more comfortable giving larger chunks of food initially. The baby might gag on it, but I felt more confident that a large (unchewed) piece wasn't going to make it far enough back in the mouth to lead to actual choking.

@Ash: @kiddosc: Thanks :) It took her awhile to warm up to purees, but she loves them now. Hoping it's the same with real food!

I would just keep trying but try not to stress out about it yet. My friend's son gagged on everything until he was about 10 months old, but then one day he just grew out of it.

@jlm22: I hope she'll take to them! I think 8 months you still have time to get her to start eating table food!

At 8m her primary nutrition can / should still be formula or BM. So, I wouldn't worry. Just keep offering daily and a variety.

@snowjewelz: She picks everything up and is pretty good with her pincer grasp...she just won't pick up food, ha.

That is a great idea with putting dollops of puree on a baking sheet and freezing them. Thanks!

Is she good with her pincer grasp already? (I forget when they perfect it) If so you can chop everything up smaller so she can't choke!

I read on Pinterest that you can put dollops of puree on baking sheet and them freeze them. Maybe that can be a good place to start since it's essentially puree in "solid" form?

I'm sorry I don't have much advice since we did BLW!

My 8 month old will finally eat purees (and yogurt!) We have been trying to give her table food, but she spits everything out. We've tried small pieces of pretty much everything. She won't pick it up and when we try to feed it to her, she makes an awful face and spits it out. I probably could be trying a little bit harder, but I'm terrified of choking. Is she still young to be concerned about her lack of interest in real food? And any tips for things to try? (and to how to get over the fear of choking?)
