Mine showed an interest in foods early (before 5 months) and stopped sleeping well, so I started trying at around 5.5 months. At first I'd just give her a cube of puree or yogurt at breakfast and dinner. Then she loved it, so I started letting her eat as much as she wanted, usually 3 or 4 cubes. Then she started getting grumpy at midday, and introducing lunch fixed that.

Around 7 months I started giving her teensy (5mm) size bites of egg, cheese, bread, whatever. Anything soft that she could mash with her tongue and that was so small she couldn't choke on it. Then at 8 months she mastered the pincer grip and could feed herself, and from then on I mostly just gave her what I eat, focusing on plants and proteins.

I rarely worried about before milk, after, all that. She didn't breastfeed any less due to food.

@meredithNYC: Hmm...I asked my ped the same thing because my LO also takes in formula, but he was thinking keeping it was good also because it's a whole grain (brown rice cereal and oatmeal) so the added fiber is also beneficial to keeping the LO regular, but totally up to you!

Agree that solids before 1 is just for fun. I give it probably anywhere from 30-1hr after nursing. When I started I just have her a few teeny spoonfuls just to taste. Then I would start with an ounce in the bowl and she can eat however much she wants. At this point it's just for fun. I plan to do once daily until she's 7 months. I completely skipped cereal.
I read that their iron store does not deplete till about 7-8 months. So I plan to introduce meats at 7 months. Probably chicken.

@Clementine: Very helpful - thank you!

Although, do you think it matters as much for me to keep on with the cereals given that my LO is formula fed and its fortified with iron?

I'm 2 months into solid feeding and this is what I've learned.
1) keep the cereals because it provides iron that your baby needs. As long as your baby doesn't have eczema, try oatmeal instead of rice if your baby doesn't prefer the rice.
2) 1 feeding a day until 6-7 mos, then 7-8 2x a day, then 8 mos 3x day.
3) first feeding I did rice/oatmeal then once they got the hang of that, I introduced green veggie purees then sweeter veggies like squash and sweet potatoes. After LO was good with veggies, I introduced the fruits, but I didn't do banana or apple, but things like pear and prunes as my LO got constipated.

So this meals looked like this...

6-7 mos 1 meal a day (cereal with fruit or cereal with veggie)
7-8 mos 2 meals a day (cereal with fruit breakfast, cereal with veggie lunch/dinner depending on the timing of second meal)
starting month 8 3 meals a day (cereal with fruit plus some yogurt), lunch (veggie purree with cereal), dinner is now some protein and veggies (usually something I pureed or finger sized bites of veggie and protein).

We're probably not the poster family for how to feed. I basically give her solids whenever it's convenient. It's never right before or after nursing, but about 1-2 hours removed from a nursing session.

@meredithNYC: We try to do in between feedings. I will feed him solids about an hour after breastfeeding and then about an hour later I will breastfeed again. Sometimes though depending on when I get home from work we will breastfeed and then immediately do solids. I always make sure he breastfeeds first though. Or have my husband give him a bottle.

@sweetkate: Okay, that actually seems easier to me! Do you feed solids immediately following breastfeeding/bottle feeding or do it in between feedings?

So we are still pretty new to solids but our pediatrician did tell us that "food before one is just for fun" and to keep breastfeeding/formula feeding like normal. DS is 7 months old and we still only do 1 feeding of solids a day, he is just now becoming more interested in them. I will probably start giving him some breakfast soon so that he is getting 2 servings of solids a day.

I just read Mrs. Hopscotch's post on solids, which couldn't have been more timely as I just tried to give LO some rice cereal for the first time today. She took to it okay, I guess, though she wasn't thrilled about it. To be honest, if we weren't trapped in the apartment because of Sandy, I might have skipped the rice cereal and opted for purees instead.

Anyway, I'm seeing a lot of conflicting advice online regarding how solids should be worked into a baby's feeding schedule. Some sources say drop a bottle feeding (LO is on formula, if that makes a difference) and some say don't drop any bottle feedings, just use solids to supplement. I'm confused!

Anyone care to share how they went about it?
