Just wanted to update, I'm so thankful that my supply recovered!! It took a solid week, and I nursed a little more frequently, but now I'm able to pump the same 3-4 oz that I used to :-) Thank you for all of the support!

We ended up using a little bit of formula last week and I just used some samples I had gotten from the Dr. So thankful for those!

My family got hit by the stomach bug very badly. I also think took baby in tot he er for iv fluids because I wasn't making any milk. Daddy made one bottle of frozen milk and it got us over the hump. Now I'm back to squirting everywhere.

I also don't respond to the pump after a while. So I went from pumping a lot to pumping almost nothing after goes and hours away from her. Luckily with our schedule this semester I can just nurse her every three hours.

But if you want to I think you can recover. If you want to do formula supplementation do that as well. I wish it was an option for us because it could take so much stress off but she's allergic to corn.

@jetsa: I also worked 3 days a week and had trouble finding time at work to pump enough. Our nursing schedule was like yours too. It worked out fine. Lo got 3 formula bottles a week.

Now at 14 months we just weened, it wasn't my plan, but I am 14 weeks pregnant and had the stomach flu two weeks ago and never recovered supply. Lo would ask for more milk after we nursed for 30 minutes at bed time. Now he has 2 cow milk bottlse a day. It's working for us.

@MrsBrewer: I started a new job at 10 mknths and do not have time to pump I fully expected to have to give bottles of formula on the weekends or for it to end our nursing relationship but nope. She nurses about before I leave, when I get home and before bed on work days. On weekends she nurses twice more during the day and doesn't complain about there being less milk. She takes solids like a champ which I think helps but we have had no issues.

@jetsa: You know, I was wondering this part as well since I'm home with her on the weekends, and 2 week days if I would have to supplement then, or if I could just offer the breast. Maybe that too would help my supply!

@GoGoSnoGirl: I totally forgot about the oatmeal! I did that a lot in the beginning days and that helped a ton. Alright I'm going to start eating oatmeal again! I really appreciate you chiming in, because ideally I would love to just nurse (I think it's cheaper and easier that way, truthfully!)

You have done a great job! If you do have to supplement while you work 3 days your body should still regulate so you do not have to supplement on the days you are home. We use the basic similac formula on days I work and nothing when I'm home with her.

This isn't what you asked, I recognize, but I was going to say something similar to @petitenoisette: I recently had a drop in supply & thought I was going to need to supplement, but have been eating oatmeal for breakfast several mornings each week, as well as making some energy bars w/ oats, flax seed & brewers yeast (+ yummy stuff like pb, honey & mini choc chips) and my supply has increased again. Just a thought, if you aren't sold on formula supplements. Maybe in addition to the fenugreek tea, this could help your supply recover.

I recommend buying the smallest option containers while you test them and see what LO likes.

I started w name brand then once we found a good one switched to the up & up equivalent...

@MrsBrewer: We prefer it for the bottles. It's room temperature which is more favorable to J. I'd say that it's a preference thing because we had Chicago tap water. Filtered, yes, but no tap water. I don't trust nursery water either.

@CakeLady: I've thought about this too since I won't be needing much formula....hmm...

@cascademom: What's the difference between using tap water vs. distilled water??

Also, we always added a few drops of gas drops to each bottle before we shook it up - the gas drops kill the bubbles and foam in a few seconds, so I never had to worry about excess gas or whatever. Probably overkill from my reflux mama period, but we did it until he was on milk.

Oh yeah, when we did Similac Sensitive, it was just a sample can I had. When I ran out, I got the Up&Up brand and I found it actually mixed a lot better than the real stuff and preferred it!

Any formula can work if she doesn't have sensitivities? Similac, Enfamil and Target Up&Up are all very popular.

My supply started to tank around 10.5 months so we did a little bit of formula - about 1 bottle a day until 12 months. I figured since I wasn't using much I'd splurge on Baby's Only. I liked that it was organic and I also read that it was the best tasting. We had no issues with it, just followed the directions on the can, they also had a video on line that was helpful since I had no idea what I was doing either!

Just wanted to chime in that I went through this with my LO at 11 months, we both had the stomach flu and my supply definitely dropped, probably more so from her being sick and not nursing as much (and I wasn't about to pump while recovering from the stomach bug either!). I had to dip into my supply for a week or so but it went back to normal eventually as we both recovered.

Not trying to suggest you shouldn't supplement, but your body is still recovering so you might be fine.

I'd get a generic brand and mix it with tap water - no need to spend tons of money! We used the Kirkland kind from Costco, but Target also makes an Up & Up generic formula that people seem to like. You can either get a formula mixing pitcher (or just a regular pitcher) and make up to a 24 hour supply in advance, or make each bottle individually. The ratio is generally one scoop to every 2 oz of water. Treat it more like cow's milk than breastmilk in terms of refrigeration - don't leave it at room temp for longer than an hour.

We combo fed and supplemented with Gerber Good Start Gentle early on. After he was over reflux at 5.5 months, we stepped up the lactose and changed to Similac Sensitive for a month, and then finally to Honest. DS was exclusively on formula by 9.5 months after I burned through my stash and seemed to enjoy the taste of Honest. The only thing about Honest is that they don't add DHA to the powdered formula - they want you to buy their DHA oil supplement and add it to each bottle. I did that for a while, but then once I ran out of the first bottle, I just didn't bother because he was already close to 1 year.

It's pretty easy. Get a basic infant formula and distilled water. See how she handles it. If her tummy gives her trouble, you can get a sensitive formula. We had to switch to soy with J because he was having issues with spit up.

I have EBF my DD for 9.5 months so far, but earlier this week I got hit with a really bad stomach flu, and my supply has completely tanked. I work 3 days a week, and when I pump at work I used to get 3.5-4 oz, but now yesterday I got 1.5 and this morning I think I got 2 if I'm lucky at each session.

I'm sad that I may need to supplement, but I'm okay with it. I'm proud that I made it this long!! I'm still trying to really up my fluids and I'm taking Fenugreek supplements, along with trying to nurse LO a little more often. But it's hard because she doesn't seem to really want to truthfully.

I have a small stash in my freezer that I'm using to supplement at the babysitter but that will only last 2-3 more weeks if I continue pumping this way.

Anyways, long story short, I have no idea about formula.....would it matter what kind I get? I know in the newborn days babies had really sensitive bellies, but I totally think now at 9.5 months she could handle anything really.....Although I could be completely wrong! Suggestions? Brands?
