do what you can - I know it's difficult. My LO loved to fall asleep and sometimes it was impossible to wake him to nurse one or both sides - so I wished I would have pumped to increase supply once he fell asleep - but I wasn't that smart. And no for 11 days post-partum 1 oz is pretty good!

Same situation as @Chopsuey, similar routine was recommended by my pediatrician's lactation consultant- feed on each side x15 minutes, then pump both sides to increase milk supply x 15 minutes.

@CameronsMomma: it was really hard for me to position her and get the pump on the other side. At 11 days I would be worried about messing up a latch with trying to pp and feed at the same time.

I would pump one time a day (usually in the morning) and either just pump the side she doesn't eat or try to pump both.

Don't go by what you pump to gauge your supply. If your baby is satisfied after eating, you are doing well.

Kellymom.com has a lot of good info re:supply, but the average amount TOTAL for pumping both sides while nursing is 0.5-2 oz so I think you're doing great :)

Ugh...fed LO from right breast and pumped the left for the first time and got less than 1oz. Should i be worried about my supply?

@miranlee: The amount of time it takes for milk to replenish varies from mother to mother and from feeding to feeding, but I think the milk should replenish within 2 hours--mine does.
If you're nervous about it, I would just pump from the breast you fed her from. Then 2 hours later feed her from the other, pump from that breast, etc.

Most things I read recommended either pumping one side/nursing the other at the same time, or pumping right after nursing. I wouldn't worry that she won't have enough, since babies are way, way better at getting milk than any pump.

I currently nurse her every two hours--is that enough time for my milk to replenish if I nurse her and pump on both sides at each feeding?

I was told by a few people if you can to pump while they nurse just so that both sides are expressed equally and then it doesn't matter which side they nurse on next.

That's my plan of attack as well, I need to pick up more milk storage bags this week or next before I forget!

I would pump the other side + the side your LO finished to see what you can get out of it.
I supplemented with a bottle on day 2 since my LO was jaundiced. I would feed on both sides and then pump both sides for 10 minutes after she was done.
I made just enough milk to keep my LO satiated so couldn't really start a stash til my milk supply increased at around month 2.

LO is only 11 days old and I don't plan onintroducing a bottle for another week or two, but i thought I could start pumping and building a stash.

Currently, I only nurse in one side at a time for abou 10-15 min, occassionally 20 min. Should i pump the other breast at that feeding? Pump the breast she just nursed on, once she's done to see what i can extract? Help!

How did you start you pumping routine?
