I have been right there. The last gastro appointment we went to, the doctor not only told me to stop breastfeeding she told me that his not gaining weight would cause his head to stop growing and basically retard him. I was balling. I knew I didn't want to stop yet.

We go back tomorrow for the follow up and it will likely be our last appointment. Our son is no longer having the problems we went to her for (bad stools) and he is doing just fine developmentally. He is just extremely small (under the 1 percentile).

Our son does eat everything he just isn't gaining weight (if only I had that metabolism). But the gastro doesn't believe us.

That sounds ridiculous and backwards. He is using the right growth charts for BFing children and not formula-fed?

@runsyellowlites: Ugh. That sucks. I think if I were in your situation I'd just quit going to visits unless there was a problem. Babies catch things at the Ped's office all the time anyway...

@Arden: I totally would... the only other bf supportive pedi now requires his patients to vax on schedule or he drops them. =/

@Bao: EXACTLY! I'm not one to endanger my child... if she was obviously behind and not thriving I would do whatever I had to to help her... but force her to do something she hasn't shown signs of readiness for just because of some chart on paper? Ummm no thanks.

Wow...I say screw the pedi and do what you feel is right, you are the mom! Breastfeeding is supposed to supply all they need, and if she is meeting milestones then what's the huge deal?

Um... isn't she getting more nutrition from the breast milk than she is from the solids anyway? Seems like reverse reasoning. I might look for another Ped.

@prettylizy: Yes, yes it is. Poor DH has to talk me down from mini anxiety attacks every visit. I actually had printed literature to back up her growth and feeding this time!

@skibobrown: Yea that's how I feel about it too. I really wish we could switch. I don't even remember DS's pedi in our old city at that time and our pedi is the most bf supportive pedi in the area. I even asked the moms in my local natural parenting/bfing group for recommendations not giving our pedi's name and he was suggested by 3 of them. I'm thinking that I may just stop going unless I have concerns or she's sick and chart her growth myself.

Hmm... that sounds like odd advice. Solids are supposed to be just for fun until a year or so. As long as your baby is doing plenty of nursing you are probably fine. Are there any other pediatricians who you could switch with... or a doctor from where you used to live who you could consult with?

Oh that's awful.... you don't need that kind of stress on your life. I say keep doing what works for you. Mama knows best!!

Apparently this is what I'm supposed to do to encourage P to eat more solids! Yep... that's basically what our Pedi told us today since P is still low on the percentiles. UGH!

It's so frustrating! She's had good growth since her last visit, moving up in % a good bit in her weight and head circumference, but for our pedi it's still not enough and he's suggesting ftt if she doesn't start eating more solids and gaining more. (she's already at the suggested 2 1/2 times her birthweight by 1 year)

I sit her with me for all meals and attempt to feed her whatever I'm eating AND some happy baby happy tot purees... she just spits everything out and swallows MAAAYBE 1 out of every 10 bites. She's meeting her milestones and is lively and VERY active, but apparently that's not enough and our pedi wants me to nurse her less often because "She'll eat the solids if she's hungry enough".

And to think... this visit actually went better than the last! Blegh... sometimes I miss the city and having more options when it comes to providers. So glad I don't have to worry about it for another 3 months!

/endrant

ETA: I would LOVE a new pedi! Unfortunately in our very medicalized community we have very few options for non-intervening doctors and ours is the most bf supporting non-pushy pedi in the area. =(
