@snowjewelz: @Freckles: I totally agree that it's not a hipster car! I think there is a large prevalence of them in places like Brooklyn - but honestly, more in the family-friendly neighborhoods than the younger, more hipster-y ones. I think my husband keeps using that argument just to annoy me :)

@meredithNYC: Damnit, i have a Subaru Impreza...i'm pretty sure i'm not a hipster. :silly: The gas mileage isn't that great, but it's AWD and handles great in snow/ice...very important considering where i live is winter 6-7 months out of the year.

Our wagon is small but i really like it. I love Volvos, but they're pricey! If you get one with AWD, it's not going to be as fuel efficient as a Prius.

We have a vw passat wagon and we love it. With snow tires, it handles really well in the snow. It has good trunk space and overall pretty roomy interior. It's is a 2003 make so the gas mileage is not very good. One of the reasons why we're looking to switch. We're also looking for something with optional third row seating so that we don't have to take 2 cars when we have visitors.

I have a Volvo wagon (XC70) and I love it! It doesn't get the best gas mileage in the world, but I'm biased because my previous car was a Honda Civic. I think it gets about 23 mpg? I have the AWD version.

We also looked at the Jetta wagon, but the Volvo has more space and is legit my dream car. I am so happy with it and I think it'll be great with kids (pregnant with my first right now).

@meredithNYC: subaru station wagons are very small IMO. i wanted to love them, but was so cramped & i couldn't put three carseats across if i needed to, but i could in my volvo. i also had handy built in booster seat in my volvo :)

i had a volvo wagon!!! actually, i've had two, one was my first car a million years ago and the other was the car prior to my current car, i had a volvo sedan too, i really love volvos! my last one got 22mpg (sadly, i'm jealous of this number now that i get 14 in my pacifica), lots of driving around town but some highway driving. repairs are pricey compared to some other makes, but they're tanks and i never had any crazy issues. they also use surprisingly large tires which make for a comfy ride, but pricey to replace. my wagon SUCKED in the snow, like i would have been better off in a carolla, so if you're somewhere with any significant amount of snow, go with the AWD.

@Mrs. Bee: Glad I'm not alone!

As for the Subaru, I'm into it. However, one time my husband read an article in the Times "Sunday Styles" section about hipsters moving to suburbia and it referenced Subarus. So now he's all like, "We can't have one of those, it's a hipster car!" Sigh.

Aka: my dream car (seriously!). Anyone have one? If so, what kind and how do you like it?

I really, really want a Volvo, but my husband says they don't get very good highway gas mileage. We currently have a Prius, so that definitely kind of skews our perspective of what is good gas mileage. But still, I don't want a gas-guzzler of a car.
