I pray. I try to commit to nothing and cancel whatever I can. I exercise. I do whatever it takes to de-stress and avoid anything stressful except the bare minimum. And I give myself permission. I remind myself that this is temporary. I read non-fiction and take naps too. I avoid the news. Sometimes I call a friend. Hope you feel better soon.

For me, some of my stress is an over reaction. I worry a lot so after I stress out and have had time to think about it, I simplify it. I think okay, how can I see this in a positive way. How can I prevent this? A lot of my anxiety and stress is caused by over thinking. What ifs are a problem for me. Things snowball in my head and all of a sudden I'm stressed about things that haven't happened. There have been times where I look back and things weren't as bad as I thought. I'm still a worrier and I think it is good to be prepared for the worst but it sucks, too. Acupuncture really helped me. It allows me to quiet my mind and prevent that worrying to overwhelm me. I also have seen a therapist for anxiety, depression and self esteem issues so this is something I've been working on for sometime now. I still have things to work on. I'm not perfect. My house is not always clean. I had to also learn and accept that some of the expectations I have for myself are high and that sometimes I need to lower them. Also, keeping an open mind and try not to compare myself to others.

@JennyD: I'm so sorry - AB has been hit so hard due to falling oil prices.

I really just think about all the things i'm grateful for every day. I'm finding myself being pretty overwhelmed these days but i think about how lucky i am and it puts things in perspective.

(I now can't get "in the end" out of my head!)

Ultimately I would not trade my life for anyone else's. I feel like I choose my life and family every day and try to be present and distraction free.

I see a therapist which is awesome for my overall outlook. I'm down to 1x a month after going every week for a year plus.

I am always looking forward to something, small plans during the week- like going to to BBQ tomorrow night. Or fun weekend plans- going on a day date with friends and littles in 2 weeks. Or big trips- family reunion next month. There's always something exciting coming up. That's really motivating for me.

I write in a gratitude journal and really try hard to focus on silver linings in overwhelming situations.

for instance:
money stress - I focus on income coming in, paid bills, good credit, etc.
busy with work - I have a job, I'm doing well, growing, learning
minor cold/flu - overall health

@irene: I should clarify, my LO is not the stress in my life. She's 4 and so easy and such a joy. Truly. My husband has gone from full time status down to very occasional help, so essentially, he's lost his jobs. We live in Alberta, so finding another job will be no easy feat. Also, it is my very busy season, and my job can be quite hectic.

@autumnleaves: I think this is how I'm going to manage this too. I have been to a therapist in the past, and it was incredibly helpful. But I don't need that sort of support this time. I just need to suffer through the best way possible.

@Raindrop: we must be the same age. That was one of my "anthems" in college too. I had a friend who used to criticize me for listening to such negative music when I was sad, but I agree with you! It's good to feel like someone identifies with you!

This might sound weird but try listening to a song that might be related to what you are going through... like a sad song related to what you are going through.

I did this a lot in college and it worked for me, because I was stressed a lot in college. Haha. This might totally date me but "in the end by linken park" was my go to song during finals week.

Recently I read that it actually something to it because it validates your feelings and makes you feel better because you know that you are not alone in your feelings and you have the right to feel that way. I hope that makes sense.

Now in days I just talk to DH about my stresses and he usually calms me down.

I've read a lot lately on gratitude and how practicing gratitude leads to increased happiness. I've just started focusing on this, but I'm really enjoying it and it keeps life's challenges in perspective.

I like to pray and surround myself with positive people or energy. I also don't hesitate to ask for help when I need it. I try to nip those green with envy thoughts right away. Things aren't always as they seem. 2015 was a rough year for a few of my closets friends and it reminded me that this life is so fleeting. Our one best and most important asset is having good health....everything is an added bonus. Hope you can find ways to de-stress and think positive thoughts.

I ignore the stress as much as possible - I am lucky I can do that as my stress is not DH, DS, our home, or work. I talk to DH about it but not with coworkers or friends. Coworkers and friends know that about it a little bit but honestly if I told them all that has happened in the past year and a half they would be stunned and saddened. I focus on what I have - a lot to be thankful for despite what is going on and I continue to do what I love - spend time with DH, LO, workout (where I see my closest friends), go to church, etc.
I thought about talking to a therapist. I did that in the past for other issues but at this point I really don't think talking to a therapist is needed with what is going on for me.

I don't focus on the positive. Sure I appreciate the good things, but if I'm in a funk, the only way to get out of it is to acknowledge it, acknowledge the reason for it, and allow myself to feel my feelings.

Ignoring feelings leads to bigger funks down the road.

So sorry to hear that - how old is your baby?
When my child was a newborn, I find that you need to walk out of the house to get some sun in order to feel normal again. That first year was so, so hard. Especially my husband was going through some sort of postpartum depression himself and it made it super hard on me.

Now that LO is almost 4, life is so much better, easier in some ways but difficult in others. I started working out everyday for 30 minutes and maybe it helps me balance out.

I would like to know too how everyone keeps their heads up! It is not easy..

I spent 16 months postpartum feeling miserable. Then I weaned and joined a gym (i.e., carved out some time for myself) and everything improved.

I try to focus on the exact moment. To actually experience it instead of tuning it out hoping for a better one, so to say. I also try to go easy on myself- sometimes things are rough, and it is okay to not be too thrilled. I also try to make a grateful list, like you did!

We are currently dealing with A LOT OF STRESS!

That said, we have a nice home, we can pay our basic bills, we love each other, we're healthy and fed. I keep reminding myself of this every day when I start to feel overwhelmed.

What does everyone else do to keep their head up?
