@kiddosc: Ha! Maybe so. Maybe he is just erring on the side of caution. I never expect doctors to know everything. And I love my doctor so much, actually! But for sure. I've already reached out to my lactation consultant.

@kiddosc: i totally agree with this. Don't give bad info. Either do some research or honestly say you aren't certain consult a lactation consultant

@agold: Honestly, that sounds like a really uneducated response from your doctor. He told you not to nurse, but didn't tell you how long... just use up your stash. So basically, he doesn't know how the steroid effects breastmilk, and also doesn't appreciate how difficult it is to build a stash. I would call your lactation coach now and then possibly have to report back to the doctor that he's giving terrible advice and that he should have women consult someone who actually knows.

@agold: I had pneumonia right after giving birth and was on 2 weeks worth of antibiotics and a week of steroid meds. I was given the go-ahead from the pediatrician to nurse as usual with the understanding that it would probably mess up baby's stomach a bit. He did advise to try and take the meds right after nursing.

Hope you feel better quick!

@DesertDreams88: Thanks. I'm going to check that right now. I think my dosage was "5" total.

@avivoca: Thank you for telling me this! I feel terrible to have had to get this shot. I got a really low dose, according to doctor. He said, for example, he wanted to give me 10, but gave me 2. I don't want to pump and dump too much if I don't have to. I also drink wine and margaritas on occasion and never pump and dump... yikes.

@kiddosc: So... my doctor originally wouldn't give me the steroid shot because of nursing. But I sort of "need" it at this point. He told me to "go ahead and use up my freezer stash." Umm... I never feel better about dipping into my freezer stash. But I suppose this is the sort of thing I have the stash for. An emergency. (also, date nights I"m hoping to get someday in a blue moon) He also said the med peaks at 12 hours. So who knows... maybe I will dump my later part of the day pump and tomorrow early morning pumps.

check the "infant risk hotline" - there's a website and app.

probably need to know the dosage level...

I'd call a lactation consultant. The one I talked to before I had my 3 year old said there really aren't any medications that are unsafe for breastfeeding so I would talk to one before doing any pumping and dumping.

I hope the steroid shot helps you feel better!

I would consult a lactation consultant to get their opinion. Did the doctor who gave you the shot tell you to pump and dump? Most doctors will tell you to do so because they don't really know and therefore just advise that everything is a risk.

@agold: Google says that you do not need to pump and dump with a steroid shot. I have taken steroids while nursing and would wait to take my meds until right after baby went to bed. I usually had a 4-5 hour window before nursing again. This was on the advice of my midwife.

Has anyone had a steroid shot during a time when you were nursing a baby?

I had to make a terrible decision today to treat an awful injury I'm dealing with. The doctor gave me a very low dose steroid shot. (I've spent weeks trying other remedies before getting to this.) I'm currently trying to figure out how long I will need to pump and dump and if I have enough frozen stash to cover this time.

Please let me know if you have dealt with this situation and what you did about it.
