I agree with limiting snacking and just having set mealtimes so he’s hungry enough to be persuaded to try some new things. I usually pair one new thing with something I know my daughter likes. Like if I’m trying to get her to eat a new type of protein or I’ve prepared it differently than she’s used to, I slice up some cheese and apples or some avocado, and have that on the side so I know she’s eating something but I ask her to try at least one bite of the new thing. I’d say most of the time she’s willing to try it but I try to not push it if she doesn’t. I go with the approach that I choose the options but she can decide the amount. Generally she self-regulates well and has been in a normal weight range.

If your son likes berries, maybe try blackberries and raspberries, add avocado or some sort veggie to the grilled cheese, maybe sneak some veggies into any sauces he likes with pasta. I often add butternut squash to Mac and cheese.

Some things that have helped for us:

- Toothpicks stuck into bite-sized/cut items (sausage, grapes, cheese cubes, chorizo/egg dishes, melon pieces, etc. My son doesn't like touching food but isn't proficient yet with a fork & spoon so if it's a food he's neutral about, toothpicks help intrigue him.

- Letting him pick a sauce to dip into (ketchup, mustard, dressings)

- Putting food on kabobs like fruit or corn (again, hates touching the food)

- With a new food, serving it with NO verbal pressure, acting like it's normal, and eating it alongside him.... especially if there is something to kind of distract him

- Eliminating a ton of snacking and letting his appetite build up (he eats at 8, 12, and 6:30, with a maybe snack at 3 if DH thinks it's necessary since he's home)

Picky texture eaters are difficult, I should know, I am one! Honestly, I'm just grateful DS eats anything. He has a milk allergy which makes things harder, but for a while we were in Early Intervention to help with his eating issues.

If you are really struggling with it, reach out to them for an evaluation. Even if you don't get services, they can give you some tips.

Definitely keep introducing new things. Our therapist called it the rule of three. One thing he likes, one thing he might eat and something new for every plate/meal.

Something that has also helped is going out of the house for meals. Not necessarily eating out, but going for a picnic. When the kids are away from home and hungry from playing hard, they are more likely to branch out because they're hungry and just want to get back to playing. At least it has been true for my kids :)

Yes! I can relate and my LO is 13 mo about to be 14mo. The one thing that has helped is being consistent about what I offer. Just have patience and keep trying something new. Maybe you can find foods that have the textures he likes? Have you tried hummus, avocado? Switch the purees to stage 3 so he starts to get the texture... just select similar flavors he enjoys!

@MsBAM: my son at that age was very similar but now at 22 months he eats almost everything. In our case having an older sibling has really helped but I agree that if you keep offering different foods over time he will eventually try them

Hi all.

I’ve posted about this before. Since my last post, LO at least eats more now but always wants the same things and doesn’t want anything with texture (no meats, no rice, no pasta, no soft veggies) etc. So I feel like he eats the same thing all the time. I did speak to a professional about this and apparently it’s an issue with textures. So I was told to give him a new food he doesn’t want and let him do sensory play with it and it could take up to 30x before he eats it. Has anyone else had this issue or have any other suggestions? Things he always eats are strawberries, blueberries, banana, baby cookies, grilled cheese, toast with butter/PB or cream cheese, any crunchy kind of cracker or cookie, yogurt, purees (stage 2 six months) and baby granola bars. Oh and he loves French fries, but we only give him a couple if we’re out eating.
