I didn't get a chance to read everyone's responses, but it sounds like you need a feeding therapy evaluation. Even if nothing it wrong, an occupation therapist will be able to help you out!

I found this website when my DD was just starting solids. She is an OT and has great articles and I think she even answers questions. Hopefully you might get an idea or two from her site. Good luck!

@MsBAM: re: fattening up fruit - our nanny makes frozen banana/peanut butter bites and they are a huge hit! she just melts peanut butter and then dips banana slices in it (half slices for our 14mo) and freezes them.

I’m sorry you are going through this. It worries me when my LO who is about to be 15 mo doesn’t eat much or throws the food on the floor.

I suggest a second opinion with a pediatrician or specialist?

Also, keep offering what he eats and add one new thing to that. I actually allow LO to hold or play with something in his booster while I feed him unless he is feeding himself. He gets bored easily and will refuse to eat. Even if it’s his fork or spoon or my phone playing music- it helps and he will eat.

It’s definitely frustrating! does he drink milk?

I hope it gets easier soon! Some children are just picky but may grow out of it!!

@MsBAM: did he like formula? If so, I would talk to the ped about adding that back in. Or toddler formula. We would've done that but she hated formula even more than solids.

@MsBAM: will he eat baked fruit? Like, baked apples with cinnamon and butter? Or maybe try to add some oatmeal cereal to the purees?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My DD is the same age, and we also struggled (though differently) with the transition.

I would get a second opinion about feeding therapy and push a bit more for services since you say he isn’t gaining weight. Now that he is a few months older, ECI or a private facility may be more willing to work with him since it has not improved and has become an overall health and wellness concern.

@Mrs. Turtle: I could try the homemade whip cream but I think any saucy like textures turn him off. And I tried smoothies today and he wouldn’t even drink it. I will try smoothies again though because he used to drink them. I feel like I have the most difficult eater. It’s crazy!!!!

@MsBAM: Smoothies are the easiest way. But any fruit with homemade whipped cream? Doesn't have to be sweetened (although we compromised and fed more sugar than we would have in order to get some calories into her). What about baked things? Mini muffins full of butter, etc.?

@Mrs. Turtle: He loves fruit. How could I fatten up his fruit? (Watermelon, blueberries, strawberries etc). He won’t dip any of his food into anything.

@MsBAM: O had trouble with food for a long time. Different reasons behind it, but similar issues. We learned to pack calories into each bite because the number of bites she would eat was so limited. With her, if I could get her started and get her blood sugar up, it would stimulate her appetite and she'd eat more. I added heavy cream to everything. Tons of butter. And learned that she would eat things dipped in ranch. Avocado is good if he will eat it. She never would. Peanut butter was also successful. You can add cream, coconut oil and peanut butter to smoothies to increase calories. Good luck! I know how stressful it is. The only other thing I'd say is make sure you've checked for all medical issues. O was a happy baby but had kidney issues that were causing her to not have an appetite.

@gotkimchi: I will give that a read!

@jape14: I had a feeding assessment done around 13mo and they said he doesn’t have issues with chewing so that is good. But he does have texture issues and they told me to do play with food. But the issue is sometimes he doesn’t even want food he usually eats. I also think he might be getting bored of the same thing. But the problem is he doesn’t eat anything else like meat, pasta, rice, etc

I’m sorry you are still struggling. I remember your other posts. My DD is the same age and we had a really tough time starting solids with her. She also refused bottles so we were worried it was indicative of some larger structural issue. We did feeding therapy from 8-12mo and it was a huge help. She is still struggles with some things but she has made huge strides and eats pretty normally nowadays. I would really recommend looking into feeding therapy - even just an evaluation could be helpful.

@Jennibenni: Thank you  My family doctor told me if he’s not getting enough calories it could stunt his growth. But what the heck am I supposed to do? I can’t literally force him to eat. My paediatricians office suggested limiting snacks but I don’t want to take that away bc he doesn’t eat much anyways! It’s very hard.

I’msorry! I know that is stressful. My older son, who’s three, has never been a good eater. When we started solids he was never interested and at each appointment the pediatrician would say “Well, when he starts crawling/walking/running he’ll work up an appetite.” He never did. He still is just not a big eater. Some nights for dinner he will consume only the grapes on his plate or something like that. I read something that helped a lot that basically said it’s tve parents job to provide the food and after that you can’t hold onto worry. I cNt remember the article or I would link it for you, maybe someone else will post it.

My 10 month old LOVES to eat and they are so different that I can see it’s nothing I did or didn’t do, it’s just the way they are.

Hey guys,

I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. At my LO’s 15m check up, my LO dropped a percentile so now we have to go back in a month for a weight check. I feel like I’m trying so hard everyday to get calories into my LO. He already has texture issues to begin with so won’t eat A LOT of foods. And lately the last few days, the foods he does eat he’s not caring for. It’s gotten to the point that I have to carry him around or put him in the tub to distract him enough to eat a purée. I know I shouldn’t do this, but I don’t want him to lose weight bc he’s small to begin with. I would probably do things differently if he wasn’t on the lower end of the growth chart. He could care less about eating. I’ve tried everything. I made him a smoothie this morning with his breakfast and all he ate were the blueberries on the tray and a couple sips of the smoothie. I feel like nothing is working and I don’t want his development to be effected. He could go all day without eating and just wants to play. I’m at a loss. Please help or share encouraging stories!
