@charlotte: *hugs* I ended up giving nutramigen at 2 months and eventually neocate at 5 months. I've since had another baby and she's a completely different baby compared to our son (wen it comes to feeding).

I'm so sorry you're so sad and stressed - I feel like I can definitely relate! All I can say is you're an awesome mommy and your baby girl is lucky to have you. My little girl is mspi too (my son was but he's almost 2) and I've had my fair share of tears shed but everything we do is in the best interest of our babies and you're doing everything right. It sucks seeing our babes miserable... I think once she gets yard to the formula, you'll see a difference. <3 pm me if you want to talk!

@Ash: @brownie: you guys commented on my mspi thread and I just found this one by searching mspi ppd. My daughter is on Nutramigen day 2 and shes crying and I'm crying and just sad and stressed out.

And that being said, I could have written your posts in this thread Ash! My daughter would act hungry, seem to nurse for awhile but then seem upset and hungry later. An awful nurse told me "you're obviously doing something wrong. She shouldn't be hungry again already. " then other times LO would shake her head around and root but refuse to latch. I asked so many times "why is this so hard" and said it didn't seem right but I couldn't put my finger on why. She never followed the easy "root, latch, eat, sleep, poop, repeat" that my son did. Even though this is my second child and I've had her a month I feel like I am a brand new FTM still figuring it all out. Longest ramble ever...? Haha.

@scg00387: Thank you so so much! I think my oversupply was from the mother's milk tea - I'm not engorged anymore now that I stopped it. I'm getting 4oz/2-3hrs and it's really hard to stay ahead of this little man but I'm doing it! It's something I need to do right now to keep my sanity. And I'm gonna do everything I can to keep him on breast milk. :) Thanks again! <3

@Ash: Was just going to check how you were doing, so glad that you're feeling better with the pumped milk. If you want to venture into trying nursing again, I know we went through a stint of block feeding that helped fussiness as well. But if pumped milk is making you both happy now, do what works! There's nothing to say you couldn't try nursing again later when he is older, if you want. I know there are lots of EP'ers on here who can give advice and support too! SO glad you're feeling better

@Ash: hugs mama! Foremilk/hindmilk imbalance is SO NORMAL--seriously, it's a very very common issue. It usually sorts itself out as the baby gets older and there are many things you can do to help--block feeding being one, and letting some of the foremilk flow out before latching the baby being another. I agree with checking out kelly mom's website and meeting with an IBCLC. Hang in there!

@Ash: There is absolutely nothing worse than dreading every feeding and Lord knows, I've been there! About six or seven weeks in is when it started to get better for us but prior to that I just tried to get through one feeding and one day at a time.

I definitely second the suggestion to consult with an IBCLC and checking out KellyMom. In the meantime could you try just feeding off one breast at a time? It might help your LO to take in more of the fatty hindmilk.

Another suggestion I have is to check out the LLL support forums, the ladies over there have a much more detailed knowledge of bf'ing and can probably give you some really good advice - here's the link!

Just gonna update.

I gave ds pumped breast milk the last 2 feedings and he's been great. No explosive poops, no fussiness etc. So I really think it is lactose overload.

And I'm gonna call my doc tomorrow because I think I have ppd - typing that makes me cry. But I need help.

Thanks for all of the support!

@Ash: No, like @brownie: said there does not need to be blood for MSPI. We just got that added "bonus" with both our babies.

After consulting with your doctor and if you decide you still want to try to continue nursing I would eliminate at least dairy (I would probably do soy also since about 50% who react to dairy also react to soy) and see if that helps. There should be an improvement once the milk proteins work their way out of both of your systems, but just be aware that it can take time to completely work their way out (usually 2-4 weeks, but took 6 weeks with DS), but if it is MSPI you should see some improvement each day.

Also, something to consider is that if you do switch to formula it might not be the answer you are looking for and there could be a trial and error process with that as well. If I were you and decided to switch to formula, I would continue to pump for awhile to make sure the formula worked, that is if you could stomach doing it (not sure how exactly you feel besides breing at a loss right now).

Have you tried wearing him? Babywearing was a life saver for us! DS hated the swing.

@Ash: There does NOT have to be blood in the stool to be MSPI. My son NEVER had blood in his stool and most definitely had MSPI. Whatever it is, there is probably not an immediate fix. Everything is going to take time. Our MSPI took 3 days to get better and 2 weeks to get good.

ETA: You know he can be efficient in 30 minutes because he is at night. Watch the Happiest Baby on Block video and love your swing. We would swaddle our son and put him in that swing. It was fantastic!

@anbanan15: I'm at a loss. I have no idea what the issue is and I don't want to keep feeding him something that's making him feel like crap.
Does there have to be blood in the stool to be mspi?

@brownie: I agree. I think if we could get this straightened out, I'd be better. All he's done is scream for 2hrs - at the breast, away from the breast. We gave him some pumped milk. But he's still screaming.

@Ash: it is awful. My son had MSPI he screamed for 12 - 15 hours straight every single day from day 2 through 3 months old. It was miserable. I tried everything from not feeding often to feeding all the time. We held him, we put him down, we put him in a swing, nothing made any difference. But we made it through and nursed until he was 2 (because of the MSPI). I had to learn all of this on my own as my pediatrician and the LC were useless. But we didn't have latching problems.

There is nothing wrong with formula feeding or pumping if you want or need to do that. Though, I think you should talk to your doctor about depression as well. Feeding your baby should not make you feel this way.

@Ash: do you feed on one side completely before offering the second? Or do you switch after a certain amount of time? You could also try block feeding. There was a good article on Kellymom about this. There is a portion about adjusting you supply. There is also some other info about foremilk/hindmilk imbalance on Kellymom that might be helpful.

I'd talk the LC about trying to even out your supply and the pedi to make sure there isn't something like MSPI going on (similar symptoms) if you want to try and continue BFing, but there is also nothing wrong with switching go formula if that ends up being the right decision for you.

@Ash: another in the this will get better camp. I could have written this post 2 months ago, you just have to trust your body and your baby and know it will get better. (I know it's soo hard!). Also baby will not take a paci if he's hungry, he'll spit it out and scream, lol!

@scg00387: J is 3.5 months and I still can't imagine he'll get there but it'd be so nice. Jack still eats a lot lol!

@Ash: totally agree with@scg00387!! A baby who is hungry will let you know!!! Sucking is soothing for babies, which is why their hands, pacis, and boobs all are comforting! Might he be tried at those times? I found that when Lo started fussing after eating around 6 weeks, it was actually bc he was tired not still hungry. It is so hard in the early days but try to e gentle with yourself and know that these hard times shall pass!
