It sounds like you’re fine but in case my experience helps I’ll chime in. My low blood pressure/volume caused me to have trouble eating for a while. I would be starving and take a bite or two of food. Then my already low blood volume would all go to my stomach and I’d get dizzy and nauseous and couldn’t eat anymore. It was really frustrating. Just another thing to consider.

I started my second pregnancy overweight and the day I went to be induced I was 2 lbs less than what I weighed at my 8 week intake appt.

For me I realize that I make healthier choices while pregnant and I cut out soda (a HUGE calorie suck for me!!) and like you I didn't have much of an appetite. After I had DS and came home I was 20 lbs less than my "pre pregnancy" weight!

Unfortunately, now that I am back at work and not pregnant I have put most of it back on...... I joke that I need to be pregnant to lose weight.

I would say as long as baby is growing that you are fine.

This is different, I wasn't overweight to start and I was sick for the first 20 weeks with both pregnancy. But the combo of being sick and the baby meant that I never really had much interest in food and could only eat small means. I just ate 5 to 6 times a day and once over night. Small means but trying to make sure it was a variety of things. I gained less the 20 pounds with each pregnancy and LO1 was 9 pounds...

Do you think you are getting enough water? That would worry me. My midwives said that babies take what they need and leave you with the rest. When I wasn't able to eat much I was super tired.

I started my last pregnancy overweight (but not terribly so) and lost 15ish lbs over the first 2 trimesters despite eating pretty well. I finally started gaining around 28 weeks when put on modified bedrest, but I think I would have gained some of this even without the bedrest - my body just finally started holding onto the weight better.

Baby was born healthy and a normal weight - we never had any growth issues in utero either.

I just made sure I was eating all full-fat and protein items (whole milk & yogurt, peanut butter, etc).

I was not overweight, but about 5-10 lbs over my "normal" weight right before I got pregnant, and I ended up losing weight through my 1st trimester (although I was also suffering from a thyroid issue and not eating much). I ended up gaining only about 10 lbs (over my pre-preg weight) by the time I delivered, although I was about 25 lbs more than I weigh now. Baby was healthy the whole time and was a totally normal weight (7lbs 2oz) when she was born at 39 weeks. I remember my midwives fussing a little over my low weight gain in the late 2nd trimester, then giving me grief when I gained a full 5 lbs in one week, but really, I think it all evened out in the end and there were no issues. Unless you have reason to be worried about the baby, I'd just roll with it.

With my second I had digestive issues and my doctor asked me to supplement with ensure. Even that I had a hard time with but I tried. I also tried to eat peanut butter on whatever I could. I also almost never took my prenatals. My son was perfectly healthy. I know it's rough but try not to stress too hard! Get an appointment with a Gi specialist if you can. I found after I started seeing my GI doctor that most regular doctors (internists, pediatricians, obs, etc..) are not that well versed on digestive issues!

@ScarletBegonia: Funny you mention HG in this post. I was thinking about HG when I read OP's concerns. My cousin is a tiny girl and she had horrible HG with her second pregnancy. By the time her third trimester hit, she was basically a skeleton with a baby baby bump, her skin was seriously grey, she passed out multiple times like in Target and while walking from her car to work. She was actually under her starting pregnancy weight. BUT - her baby girl was born perfectly healthy and my cousin bounced back and is amazing. (Doctors did tell her no more babies!) But even being under weight due to HG, baby and mom can still amazingly be just fine!

You mention that it feels like you've had bariatric surgery, and maybe thats kind of whats happening internally? Maybe from the beginning whats moved to make room for your growing uterus is your stomach rather than your other organs, so the volume its capable of containing has shrunk? I think its great you're being checked out, but try not to stress too much about it - it sounds like you're being well looked after and if bub is growing normally then he/she is getting what he/she needs! Whenever I'm worried about my insufficient and/or horrible food consumption, I think about the poor women with HG who can barely keep a morsel of food down their whole pregnancies, who still manage to grow healthy babies! I'm sure its all fine and that your appetite will return with a vengeance once baby is out.

@StrawberryShortie: with each of my three pregnancies I i’ve lost 10 to 15 pounds in the first half of the pregnancy. I’m not overweight, but certainly not petit either. I think my body just kicks up my metabolism when I get pregnant (and the not drinking wine also helps with calorie consumption lol). I always end up gaining weight starting around 20-24 weeks. I’ve never had a problem getting food down though, that does seem concerning to me.

Sounds like baby is getting what they need to grow, which is great!

Are you taking any supplements? I felt like that once, and it was a reaction to fenugreek. I couldn't eat - I felt sick and light-headed a lot, but I had a newborn and for a long time thought it's part of a normal recovery. Never had any blood test to find out exactly what it did to me, but I read later that it messes with one's blood sugar somehow. And on that note, have you had your blood sugar tested? Not only to see if it's too high, which is what doctors normally worry about, but also to see if it's too low...

Good luck, hope you get to the bottom of this!

@agold: I'm waiting on an OB consult.
Even with a higher BMI, they usually don't recommend weight loss at this level (especially after 2nd trimester)

and I'm 25lbs down. I just wondered if someone else had a similar thing happen.

My first pregnancy was normal.

Oh well, I'll wait on the OB appointment.

@StrawberryShortie: Then you should for sure talk to your doctors more about what is going on. Always keep your doctors informed. What have they told you to do thus far? I had pretty bad reflux during my last trimester that made even drinking water hard. Try to find something you can eat. Maybe try eating at different times of the day. Some times may be easier to eat than other times. Look at what your BMI is also. I know the higher your BMI is, the less weight you should gain during your pregnancy.

@RKitty: Thanks for the feedback!

I think their concern is because I'm small (only 5'3"), so although I am technically overweight for my height I'm still pretty petite.

I didn't gain any weight until like week 38. I am overweight (over 250, but also 6 foot tall). No health issues during my pregnancy either. Baby was perfectly fine and weighed just under 10lbs.

I too struggled with no appetite during my pregnancy. It wasn't morning sickness it was a complete lack of appetite. I just tried to make sure I had snacks available at all times and any time I was actually hungry to eat as much as I could.

If you were eating a healthy diet and losing weight I would say there's nothing to worry about. But if you're not able to get food down, I would ask about Reflux. I had reflux in both pregnancies that made me feel very full and like I had a lump in my throat so swallowing/eating could be very uncomfortable.

If your baby is healthy and growing, and your doctor has no concern for your health, then I don't think there is any reason to worry!! Are you eating healthier? That could just be it. If I were you, I'd be so happy for your growing healthy baby and be happy you aren't gaining a ton during the pregnancy. I was a bit over weight when I got pregnant and first lost weight, before gaining a bit in my third trimester, and afterwards was 20 pounds under my starting weight. I've never felt healthier and had absolutely zero concern with lack of or little weight gain.

Has anyone else lost a significant amount of weight during pregnancy and, it had nothing to do with nausea and/or morning sickness? I'm 23 weeks and still losing weight

Back story: I was overweight when I got pregnant. To date I have lost 25lbs and it is not slowing down. I have no diabetes or history of thyroid issues (both were tested in first trimester and were normal).

I have had no nausea or morning sickness. I just have no appetite and when I try to eat, I can only get a few bites in... I feel almost like I've had bariatric surgery (but I haven't). Small meals & smoothies aren't helping.

I'm waiting on an OB consult as midwife is wondering what is going on.

Every other case I've heard about someone losing 20+lbs in pregnancy, they were usually 250lbs+ to begin with.

Has anyone else had this? Did everything turn out okay?

My family and friends are starting to give me weird looks because overtime they see me, my bump is growing but my body is shrinking.

*so far baby is doing great, no issues noted at the anatomy scan.
