Hi there, saw this post and wanted to see if the original poster had any update to this. My son is 14 1/2 months old and has not interest in clapping either. He has done it a few times but I can't for the life of him get him to do it with me. When did your son finally start? Mine waves bye, high fives, does so-big, and does lots of pretend play. He is also kind of pointing as well with his hole hand. I seem to recall my earlier son doing this prior to actually pointing with his index finger. It started out as more of a reach and turned into a point. I am not sure if I should count his 4 claps as him clapping or to be concerned that he still just has not interest in this. He is super social, has a few words, interested in and plays with other kids including my older son. These dang milestone charts are enough to drive me batty. Would love to hear any updates!

My LO doesn't do some of the things you named (same age) yet she clapped early. I think they just learn at their own pace and from what you said it doesn't sound like you have cause for concern.

Thanks everyone! I'll just keep encouraging him to clap and talk with the pediatrician at his 15 month checkup about it.

@mdf106: I don't think it's really anything to be worried about unless it's accompanied by lack of other gestures (pointing, showing, waving, etc.) and sometimes it means that they have trouble bringing their arms/hands to midline, but usually it's not an issue if they can bang an object together with both hands. And that's great that your LO has learned 3 new words! It's crazy how fast they learn at this age!

My 13 month old does not clap, and it did not occur to me to be worried about it. He was not talking until earlier this week, which I was worried about, but he has learned three words this week.

It might be sudden one day. Mine refused to clap and didn't like it when we made her hands clap. Then one day out of the blue right before her first birthday, my sister clapped and LO imitated her. And hasn't stopped. Your LO might just not be interested yet.

My LO is 13 months and has been obsessively clapping and pointing for months but doesn't walk, shake her head no or point to body parts. Guess different kids just do different things on their own time! I wouldn't worry :)

C is the same age and while she does love clapping, she doesn't do a lot of the things you mentioned, and I think she is still "normal", so I'd say he's fine. :)

Mine could clap but chose not to until around that age. He could bang things together like yours so I knew he could. I wouldn't worry.

B is 13 months and has never even come close to clapping. She does all the things your son does ( minus walking.) he'll get there :) with all the other things he does, I wouldn't worry about the clapping

I wouldn't be worried about clapping also! :)

My LO didn't walk till he was about 18 months old and that was very concerning and he didn't talk that much, he barely was at the minimum word limit at 2. He's 2.5 now and is all caught up. He did clap at 7 months old.

You have a walking talking LO at 13 months and that's pretty good!! In fact impressive! :)

Ok, just trying to see if anyone else had a late clapper. My son is 13 months and still had never clapped! He has banged 2 objects together with both hands a few times. His pediatrician didn't seem concerned and said we'd talk about it at his 15 month checkup.

He's pretty much hit all other milestones... Says mama, dada, num num, arf arf (he loves dogs), and nana. He has waved though he doesn't do it that often anymore, he walks, shakes his head for no, can point to a few body parts, loves playing so big and peekaboo. He just started pointing, though it's mostly with his whole hand right now.

He just has zero interest in clapping! Friends and family act shocked when they find out he's never clapped, so I guess I'm trying to see if it's really that abnormal?
