We are 3 days shy of 8 months and still on 3 naps. I think he may be close to dropping one though. Right now he takes a nap an hour after he wakes up (so 7:15ish), 10am and 2pm. So we will probably be dropping the 7:15 and bumping up the 10am to 9am and the 2pm to 1pm.

@SweetiePie: Our wake time is very similar!! Our main issue is the length of naps, not getting him down for them. He'll (usually) go down for a nap pretty easily, which makes it hard for me to see how we'll eventually drop to 2 naps. (occasionally our nanny will even put him down for a 4th nap if he crap naps! he's a really early riser so the timing sometimes works out that way.) I think if I were home with him every day, I'd work more on getting onto the 2-3-4 schedule. However, we are in a nanny share and it's hard for the nanny to manage the variable napping schedules of two kids (the other baby is 10 months old and a terrible napper), so we have to go with the relative ease of the 3-nap schedule for now. I've definitely received my fair share of comments about how "weird" his napping schedule is (mostly from my in-laws) but it works for us so I try to ignore the commentary!

@jape14: same! For a few days in the last couple of weeks I really thought he was trying to tell me he wanted to drop a nap so we did really close to 2-3-4, but for the last 1.5 weeks now he is firmly on 3 naps, Max wake time being 2.5 hours but usually only 2.

On my phone so can't easily reply to everyone, but again, thanks for the reassurance! I honestly really like that he's on 3 naps, more time for chores and me time :-) But 2 would also be nice to have a bigger chunk of time in the afternoon to make play dates and run errands without rushing home for a nap.
I'll just continue to listen to his cues :-)

@SweetiePie: my LO is 8 months and still on 3 naps. We have had one or two random days where the stars align and a 2-3-4 schedule works out, but that is definitely not the norm!

M takes 3 naps still at 13 months. I'm trying to get him to just 2. They're all catnaps, though.

Lots of babies have 3 naps at this age. DS transitioned to 2 naps early - like a month ago! - but it was really obvious when it was time to make the transition. He fought that last catnap like crazy so we dropped it and brought his bedtime 20-30 minutes earlier for a little while, and then he started fighting his other 2 naps, so we extended waketime to 2.5 hours and that's where we are now.

My LO was on 3 naps until about 9 months. She started really fighting her last nap around 8.5 mo and so I started a rough 2-3-4 schedule and it worked out well for her (although hers is more 2.5-3.5-3.5)

My LO has always dropped naps on the later side. I'm pretty sure he was on 3 naps until 10ish months (he's almost 18 months and we're just now starting to transition to one nap!).

I think there is a huge range of normal - my son was solidly on two naps around 6 months and dropped to 1 before he was 1 - people thought I was crazy and depriving him of sleep, but its just what worked for us! Follow your little one's cues and do what feels right!

@tysonja: @birdofafeather: @Peasinapod: @Pancakes: @jmarionsmith: @Mrs.Someone: @CakeLady: Thank you all for your input. Sometimes we just need some reassurance that we're doing ok :-) So much second guessing involved in parenting! I feel like some people look at me like I have 3 heads when I say how much he naps, and I've even had comments that I'm forcing him to nap so much. It definitely puts a damper on our social life. But it works for us right now, and I guess that's what matters most, so I'll keep chugging along!

@SweetiePie: I'm a September 2014 mom and my lo occasionally takes 3 naps, but usually it's 2 and she's very tired by the end of our day. I think she still needs 3 but she fights that 3rd nap and it messes with bedtime if she has it. So if 3 is working for you definitely stick with it!

@SweetiePie: I think you should do whatever is working for your kid. Our ped tried to get me to drop a nap before DS was ready and it really stressed me out. He dropped it eventually on his own, I don't remeber exactly when but on the later end. I should take my own advice and stop worrying about when he will drop a bottle...

@SweetiePie: I think I read somewhere that anywhere between 6-10 months is normal to transition to 2 naps! Don't feel guilty! Every baby is different and 3 naps is definitely better than an over tired baby! :)

@jhd: @jmarionsmith: Thanks! Mom guilt is so weird! Im sure if he only took 2 naps I'd feel like he didn't get enough but at 3 I feel like I'm keeping him locked up and away from fun :-) Which isn't even true because I'm not forcing him to nap, I just follow his cues.
@jmarionsmith: same with us. I'd say 6 days out of the week he still takes 3 naps. But one day he will just sort of roll around in his crib for the 3rd and I eventually take him out and play for a couple hours and then do a really early bedtime. I guess maybe he's on the brink of transitioning?
Of course I'll ask my ped if he's still taking 3 naps at his 9 month appt (we don't have an 8 month). But was just curious! I think most of my fellow sept 2014 mamas are on 2 naps!

My LO just turned 8 months on the 3rd and is pretty much still taking 3 naps every day. Occasionally I've been able to stretch her and do only 2 naps but that means a super early bedtime and that's just not convenient for us with a toddler.

I figure around 9 months I'll try to start pushing her towards 2 naps if she isn't there yet.

My son is 3 days shy of 8 months and he still takes 3 naps on most days. Totalling about 4 hours of naps. Is that strange? I feel sort of like at 8 months he should be ready for 2 naps but some days he just can't keep his eyes open for more than 2 hours still. As long as he's not fighting the naps do I keep letting him?
He still goes down for bed without a fight and sleeps 11-12 hours solid. When he starts fighting naps and/or bedtime is that when it's time to cut down to 2?
Thanks!
