DS didn't sit independently until 6.5 months (and that was still wobbly). I had no idea that was something I should practice with him until about 2 weeks before his 6 month appt, so I was a little panicy about it, practicing all the time. The doctor was 0% concerned. He said progress is what mattered, and wouldn't be concerned unless he hadn't made forward progress at his next check up. I think your doctor is being kinda overly cautious!!

DS1 was so very tiny, he couldn't really sit until after he crawled! He just had no base to do so.

T is still really wobbly at 6 months. But E was sitting great. I think there's a big range for this!

I don't think you need to worry, but a good way to practice is to let LO sit on the corner of s box that is a relatively cozy fit. It provides some support but still makes the baby's muscles work. A friend's pediatricîan suggested this trick and the friend shared it with me...it definitely helped my DD build sitting confidence (and made cute christmas photos, haha!)

I agree with others, DS wasn't sitting perfectly at 6 months. He was barely doing a tripod sit at 5 mo 3 weeks when we had photos taken. 3 weeks later at 6.5 months he had it perfected. It can happen fast!

LO's doctor wasn't concerned that he wasn't sitting upright by himself at his 6 mo appt. He would sort of tripod with an arm at that point. He was able to sit independently a month later. He was already crawling though. The important thing to remember is that all babies develop at different rates. I'm surprised that your LO's doctor was concerned.

My lo didn't sit until 8 months. that is when she could roll over into a sitting position on her own. I didn't try to just prop her up any earlier though.

Thanks everyone, I feel much better. Strange because our doctor is usually very laid back when it comes to milestones.

My son definitely couldn't sit well at six months. And he was unsteady (i.e. We stayed nearby or put pillows behind) until he could get in and out of a sitting position by himself, which was closer to 8 months for him. His doctor wasn't worried, and he went on to be an early walker.

Neither of my kids (twins) were sitting perfectly at 6 months. They turned 6 months last November 3 and by Thanskgiving (so, almost 7 months) DD was sitting very solidly, but DS was not (I vividly remember because my sister was watching him for a sec and he fell over and smacked his head because she thought he could sit on his own! Oops!). Anyway, by the time he was sitting solidly he was also starting to crawl. He went on to be an early walker as well, and at 18 months he is perfect, if I do say so myself. Our pediatrician was not concerned in the least that they were not sitting solidly by 6 months. I would try not to stress if possible, and continue giving your daughter chances to practice to sit whenever you can.

The normal milestone is sitting independent by the end of the 6th month. Our LO could sit by 6 months but still had to be very closely watched until almost 7 months. And then she started crawling the next day! I would t worry at this point but just keep practicing it.

We just had my daughter's 6 month visit (she was 6 months last weekend) and the doctor was a little concerned that she's not sitting independently yet. She can sit for a few seconds, but eventually flops over. The doctor wants to see us back in a month to recheck it. I didn't realize this was such a hard and fast 6 month thing. I've been trying to work on it with her but she just wants to roll everywhere - she doesn't stay still! Anyone else have a late sitter? Any tips to encourage her?
