I'm with you...my stitches freak me out, and when they itch or sting, I get all paranoid.

I can't see my stitches, even with a mirror, and I think some have already fallen out by my rectum, which freaks me out, but not much I can do, I guess. I'm doing my best to ignore them. But they're annoying.

@shopaholic: I had my OB look at it because I was paranoid and she did a silver nitrate swab and um...that sucked but the stinging went away.

Oh my gosh, I haven't looked down there at all and refuse to feel around too! But the area stopped being sore about 2.5 weeks so maybe my stitches have dissolved? I don't actually know. I didn't have a tear though - I had an episiotomy, which I think heals quicker?

@tororojo: Hopefully the itchiness means they are healing. I feel like the internal ones threads are poking at me all the time, especially when I shift positions.

@mrs. wagon: Prickly & Weird perfectly describe it!

@littlebittyhouse: I think you might be right! I think the main, big one dissolved, but the skin is still torn or raw because it stings. Hopefully only 1 or 2 more weeks of healing for me then!

@shopaholic: if it is stinging it might be that the stitch dissolved and now there is some open skin where the stitch was. That's what happened to me. I was all set by about 4 weeks pp with a 2nd degree

About 3-4 weeks. I want to say they were all gone by 4 weeks pp, for sure.

I looked and felt too... and instantly regretted it. lol

Omg you're brave!! I did not look or feel down there until I was sure it was all healed up and gone!!! Definitely took a few weeks and it all felt pretty prickly and weird.

I tore up front same day as you and am pretty sure they're still there...based on the itchiness, which I am taking to mean that they're healing? I have been using the peri bottle in the shower to douse them in water and patting w/Tucks every time I'm on the toilet, which seems to help a little w/the discomfort.

I had dissolvable ones as well, and I think they were all gone by 3 weeks pp. sitting was a pain in the ass ( ha ha ha) for 2.5 weeks?

Like @lemondrop: the shower head is awesome. My midwife recommended it, said it helped the stitches dissolve properly and the knots come out for the inner ones

@mrskc: Just small tears they told me, but mostly inside, with one big stitch at the bottom that I could always see/feel. But that one I can't find the thread anymore and it stings a lot when I sit & move. :(

@ladyfingers: Ooh! I hope they dissolve then soon! The ones I could see tonight, the threads look pretty thick still!

At least 3 weeks for me. Ugh, misery! The detachable shower head was awesome for flushing and making things feel better.

You are brave, I avoided that area for 5 weeks! I didn't dare look and only touched with a washcloth while showering ;) then at my postnatal checkup the doctor informed me they'd dissolved 2-3 weeks after birth. I had a 2nd degree tear. Never pulled a stitch, though.

What kind of tear did u have?

I had a second degree and didn't even notice them. I think they were gone around 3 weeks pp. at least that's when I got up the courage to get a mirror and check out things down there. I never saw any. I was sore for about 5-6 weeks.

I didn't start feeling like my stitches were gone until 4 or so weeks. I definitely lost a few in pads etc but I just decided I wanted to ignore them. So I did. I also had them close to my anus and tore a few there as well as my body adjusted.

If you had to have stitches after L&D (and who didn't?), how long did it take to heal? I have dissolving stitches, but at almost 2 weeks PP, I still can see and feel them! Well, most of them. Mine are more inside...but I took a look with a mirror today and I had more stitches than I thought! And the strings are still kind of long and definitely thick and pokey - NO WONDER why I'm so uncomfortable! When will these things "dissolve" by?

And has anyone ever PULLED one of the stitches? I have one that I could see and feel before, but not anymore. Instead, it's really painful and stings there, and think maybe it got pulled out?
