I'm a biologist who has done tons of work in the field out of my car and my husband is a coach of multiple kids teams. Years of making due in weird situations have left us with this list. We have used ourselves/loaned to someone in need every single one of these:
Screwdriver (one with multiple heads)
Roll of duct tape
Sharpie
Waiter-style cork screw (you have NO IDEA how many times I've used this, including the teeny tiny "knife" for the foil)
At least 1 old towel (we have 2)
1 or 2 plastic trash bags that don't have holes (for car sickness)
4-5 paper towels folded up
waterproof tarp
umbrella in the glove compartment
small flashlight

I keep nut-free snacks in the car b/c my kids sometimes are picky at breakfast and need a snack on the way to daycare, plus they're STARVING at pickup.

following this thread... I just got a new car and its a wagon with lots of boot space. I currently just have the pram, nappy bag, and an old towel tucked into the side compartment.

I have a canvas bag with some toys for DS and a spare lovey to hand him in his seat. We keep a hooded towel on the hook in the minivan to use as a blanket/tarp in the carseat both for warmth and to catch crumbs. We also use the towel when taking him inside in the rain. We keep wipes for face and hand wiping when getting in the car, a pair of DS' shoes, and a portable car jumping kit (sooo much better than just having jumper cables). We keep rice cakes and mum mums in the car for carseat snacks and a straw cup for water. In the winter I also keep a few clementines in the cup holder - its easy to just peel and hand him something to nosh on and he gets a little vitamin C.

I should probably get a first aid kit in there too. Spare outfits and diapers and all that live in his diaper bag.

The only thing I'd add is a flashlight/lantern and a bottle or two of water.

We keep a kit in the back with a first aid kit, a jack, wrench, jumper cables, a reflective vest and a flashlight. We keep two Pendleton blankets for picnics or emergencies. I keep a kid's box with books, one set of pants/undies and two diapers/wipes, two water bottles and two granola bars. The Beco and stroller are usually on board too.

I cleaned my car out today and put an organizing bin in it. The bin holds:
-Ergo
-Jumper cables
-First aid kit
-Diaper change kit
-Kleenex
-Returns or other items necessary for returns
-Spare blanket (would have snowpants, etc. in dead of winter)

We bring the diaper bag any time we take DD anywhere other than daycare.

What do you keep your car stocked with? Any suggestions for good snacks that withstand extreme temperatures?
