Stockpiling was amazing for us! They estimated DD would be 7-8lbs. Our peanut was 5lbs 14oz. So, here's what we did:

Bought roughly 450NB diapers, and used about 100 diapers a week. She was in NB diapers for 5 weeks. We change her when she's wet though. I know some people wait for poopy ones or if it gets really full. LO has very sensitive skin, so we budgeted for more diapers, and change as soon as we know it's wet or blue line. We ended up having 30 NB left, and I gave them to a lady in my building whose adoption went through with really short notice!

Size 1 I was gifted a case of 156, and bought another two cases on deals. We pretty much used them all, up until 3 months I think.

Size 2. Here's where it got tricky. I don't remember how many I purchased. But, that same lady in our building gave me a case of 216 huggies as a thank you for all the clothes I kept donating to her. So, we ended up with 500 size two, and had about 200 left when she moved to size three at about 5months. She wasn't in size two long AT ALL!! But, I've been using them for diaper cakes!!! My sweet friend had twins, so I made her a diaper cake, and that takes about 65 diapers.

Size three I purchased one case of 156 with a deal from Amazon right when DD was born. She's been in 3 for months, and I still buy cases when they come up on deals. Which, I haven't seen a deal lately! DD is maybe 16lbs, 8.5months, and will be in 3 for quite a while longer. She may be in 3, or not that far into 4 by time we start potty training.

I'd say I spent no more than $300 stockpiling diapers and wipes.

We are still in size three over here at 10 months. I feel like she spent a long time in each size. She has skinny thighs. Going up a size would result in leg leaks.
I didn't stockpile. I needed to be able to try different sizes and brands in a small pack (I know not cost effective but better than a 160 pack of a diaper I'd never use). Once I found one that worked I'd set up a subscribe and save on Amazon.

I also forgot to mention...

We used Pampers sensitives/swaddlers from day 1 until about six months. She then developed this diaper rash that would not go away (lasted a month)...no matter what kind of creme or natural remedy I used. I switched to a different diaper brand and it went away the next day!

So certain brand not work best with your LO

@oliviaoblivia: Agreed! We flew threw diaper sizes and were in size 4 by before 6 months old! I would have had so many extra diapers in the smaller sizes had we stockpiled! It would have been such a waste.

I didn't stockpile at all... and I feel like LO has been in size 4 for about a year already. He had so many blowouts before he started eating more solids and we had to switch brands so I would be cautious about investing too much on a particular brand or size.

Yeah I stockpiled diapers and wipes like crazy when I was pregnant and didn't have to buy diapers or wipes for at last 6 months after DS was born. I chose Pampers Swaddlers because those were the ones that most people told me worked best for them and because I could exchange them at most national retailers. Target is across the street from us, so that's where I scored most of my deals and they always let me do an in-kind exchange in terms of sizes. We spent no more than $200 on wipes and diaps on that initial stockpile.

DS2 ended up being bigger than we expected and so we have ended up with wasted diapers and having to return those we can. He was in newborns for two weeks and size 1 for two weeks and is already into size 2s at 5 weeks. He has been gaining a lb a week and I think that will slow down soon though. We were in size 3s and 4s a long time so you can't go wrong with extras of those.

I would say that I am probably one of the few that actually stockpiled diapers.

The way I went about it is that I googled stockpiling diapers and there were several blogs where the blogger posted how big their baby was when they were born and how many diapers they went through at each size. I knew I wasn't having a big baby, so I was able to come up with estimates and stockpiled on the conservative side of diapers....also taking in consideration that I would be gifted them. I didn't want to continually worry about buying diapers, so even if I had some and only had to buy a package here and there I was ok with that. I only stockpiled up to size 3 because I figured I would stockpile size 4 and up after the baby was born.

Stockpiling was absolutely amazing for us. Our stockpile lasted up until 6-7 months. We did receive some free diapers, but not crazy amounts. I only spent $130 in total for the diapers we stocked. It averaged about a 68% savings.

I'm a terrible planner so I would never be able to stockpile. I can't even buy clothes for next year's winter without stressing about it.

With LO1, she was born close to 9lbs so we went straight to size 1, stayed in size 2 for very little bc she was having blowouts and stayed in size 3 for awhile. She potty trained after being in size 4 for a bit. We didn't night train til much later so we had some size 5 for night training.

I did end up returning a lot of diapers I didn't use (gifts) bc we didn't need it anymore.

We CD'd LO1 so I have no real frame of reference but LO2 is still safely in size 1 at 8wks. My friends threw me a shower for her and everyone brought diapers but we got a ton of bigger sizes...I've had to buy 2 more cases of size 1, and I'll probably have to buy more.

My two kids have been so different in size, I wouldn't have been able to pre-buy a lot of diapers without having to do the extra work of exchanging or wasting a bunch. My first Lo never made it past size 4 before PTing, and used each size for a pretty long time. But LO 2 is much chunkier and has super chunk thighs, so she's already in 3s at 6 months and I think will be in 4's within the next 6 weeks, she's blown through all the sizes really fast.

eta: I'm probably just anti-stocking up because we live in a small place and the last thing I want to do is store a bunch of huge diaper boxes that I won't use for a year.

I would say sizes 2-4, but maybe only a few boxes of each? Obviously you'll probably use more, but we never even made it out of size 4 before potty training so I would hate to get stuck with larger sizes that you'll never even use if you have a tall/skinny LO. :)

I feel like we went through sizes 1-3 really fast, and have been in size 4 for almost a year now (at 14 months). I'd be hesitant to stock up since all babies grow differently. I still have a case of size 1 diapers I never even opened b/c he outgrew them shortly after I ordered them (and I never got around to exchanging, although I hear Target is really good about that?).

Our usage was very different from that chart. If I had followed that chart I'd have had an excess of four months worth of diapers by six months.

DS was just under 7 lbs. he was in NB for 3 weeks, size 1 and size 2 each about 6 weeks, and then switched to size 4 at 7 months. And he went through about 8-10 a day. At 8 months we are still in size 4 and not moving up anytime soon. I stock piled through size 3. Walmart takes exchanges of boxes so some extras I gifted I returned without a receipt.

If you stocked up on diapers while you were pregnant, how many of each size did you use as a goal? With LO1, we just tried to have a few boxes of each, but I am trying to be more organized for LO2.

Our shower will be about 4 weeks before he gets here, and I know some friends are going to get us diapers, (thank you to them!) But I am trying to focus our what to aim for. So far we have about 400 size 2, 500 size 3, and 400 size 4. I figure friends will focus on Nb and size 1. LO1 spent almost no time in nb.

Where would you focus on?
