BTW turns out I have the flu, not a stomach bug. I’ve only had the flu once before and didn’t realize it could also cause nausea!

We are the same, I don’t remember getting stomach bugs at all as a teenager or adult except one memorable Christmas 😜. But now with a LO in daycare it’s been once a year or more. We’ve also gotten some bugs from my sister’s kids. I don’t think it’s a food safety issue just a kids are gross one.

The celiac connection is interesting too, I’m now wondering about my husband who seems to frequently get really short lived bugs. I think has some sort of undiagnosed GI issue.

@rocker2014 and @marym Celiac actually runs fairly rampant among the women on my mom’s side and I just realized I thought I had gotten tested at my annual exam this year (which was my first in 5 years, which was the last time I was tested) but I just checked my labs and I didn’t. Not sure why and I’m wondering if they forgot to put it on. My husband actually recently went GF because he was getting some strange symptoms and a funny rash (but not the Celiac rash) and they completely went away after a test run so it wouldn’t be a big change diet wise. I did sort of figure Celiacs got stomach bugs worse—my mom gets SO sick. Thanks for the tip!

I was going to agree with @Rocker2014:

We didn't know there was celiac in our family until one niece has more usual symptoms. Her parents were tested, and my brother has the gene. My brother and I have had GI issues, but only as an adult, and the sort of thing that doctors have said is probably just our normal.

I got tested anyway, and I have it. I was never super sick from gluten (I loved bread!) until I gave it up. Maybe see if you can get the simple blood test (make sure to do it while you're still eating gluten)

Now that I've gone gluten free, when I'm glutened, it looks a TON like a stomach bug or food poisoning. I don't get an actual fever, but I feel really feverish and get hot/chills along with the stomach issues.

My son had stomach things several times last year (like three times in the fall) and I didn't get sick once and I don't think I have an super strong immune system or anything like that. I found it actually got worse in Kindergarten as compared to daycare, because the schools aren't doing as good a job at disinfecting the surfaces and kids tend to use communal supplies.

So, I have another weird theory for you, because you mentioned celiac in your family. I never had stomach bugs growing up, but was diagnosed with asymptomatic celiac when I was about 10 (this was in the 1980's when nobody had heard of it - I was diagnosed because my brother had terrible celiac symptoms and they tested everyone in the family). About 6 years ago I had a major medical incident, and that triggered my celiac to become symptomatic. I follow the diet religiously, but have had 1- 3 BAD stomach bugs annually since becoming symptomatic. I mentioned it to my GI doc, and he said that it is very common for those with celiac to be much more susceptible to stomach bugs, and for them to last longer.

If you have any other potential symptoms (they're not all GI related), it couldn't hurt to get tested since it runs in families.

I would also say normal. I was also the same and hadn't had a stomach bug until my kid started daycare. The first year I caught everything from him including colds, stomach bug, HFM, etc. The second year was a little less. This year has been ok other than I did get his stomach bug 2 weeks ago. Those are particularly contagious I find as you get puked and pooped on until it's over. We had shared food 2 days before so I was doomed. I basically follow what was mentioned above with hand washing, vitamins for everyone, wiping surfaces, etc. And do the best I can.

Yes, its part of having kids in daycare. The FIRST thing we do when we return home from anywhere is wash hands, faces, and noses for both our boys. DH and I wash our hands CONSTANTLY and switched to foaming hand soap because its easier for our kids to use.

We also try to disinfect their thermoses and water bottles frequently in a mild bleach solution since those are always at school and have milk in them and what not.

Also, we basically wipe EVERYTHING down constantly with Lysol wipes. Like, its what we clean our whole house with.
Our housecleaner disinfects the bathrooms and fridge every other week when she comes, but I Lysol everything almost daily with the wipes.

And I keep hospital grade Clorox germicide wipes in my Save For Later basket on Amazon in case something really gnarly comes home and I can have it shipped to my house same day.

Oh and we try very hard not to share food, especially this time of year. Lots of food waste, but whatever, not going to risk it.

I’m trying to figure out if there’s something going on at my house or somewhere we frequently go or if this is some new way of life. Between the ages of 8 and 21 I didn’t have a single stomach bug and was sans vomit (except for a few non-illness induced times in college). Since my daughter was born 4 years ago when I was 25 I have gotten stomach bugs every year. This year I am on bug #2 (it has been 4 days and I haven’t had anything ugly come out but can’t eat and have a fever and chills), and also had a really bad case of food poisoning.

Both my kids go to daycare a few times a week so are exposed to everything. We keep our house pretty clean but it’s not spotless like mine was growing up (thanks to having an ICU nurse for a Mom). My dad had a stomach bug once when I was growing up, and my mom had food poisoning once and some bad GI issues likely due to undiagnosed Celiac. My in-laws don’t necessarily practice the best food safety, but I avoid eating anything I know has been prepared unsafely and am confident this isn’t a food safety issue UNLESS it’s listeria. I washed and bleached the hell out of my fridge this morning.

Is this just the temporary new normal for a WOH Mom with kids who are in daycare? If this happened to your family when did you outgrow it?
