Thanks all! The NPR article was an interesting read - definitely in line with what I was turning up in asking friends about their experiences w their kids. My daughter was never a vomiter preciously but she has had issues with constipation in the past and that can apparently trigger nausea in kids, so that’s a possibility. I’ll check in with our doctor just in case anything needs to get checked but I’m glad to hear that it’s so common.

Its probably nothing, but digestive issues run in my family. My first thought is some kinds of allergy/intolerance. I have IBS, triggered by most dairy. However temperature change also is a huge trigger (ex: hot drink while outside in cold weather). My grandmother had severe IBS, and it took a long time to figure out that eggs were her trigger. She would often be out at a restaurant and would have to go vomit in the restroom.

So I'm not trying to panic you - kids throw up!! But just giving you one possible option.

My DD is a vomiter... she has a very touchy gag reflex and can even make herself throw up. It's not fun.....

She also gets car sickness. I've become very used to it.

Most times after she throws up she is 100% perfectly fine.

I've tried to pinpoint the "stimuli" but nothing ever remains the same.. sometimes she's eaten, sometimes she's hungry, sometimes it's too hot outside, sometimes she smells something that is gross, sometimes it's when she's tired.... basically I never know.... I am just prepared for it at any time. Luckily now that she is older she can warn us so the "clean up" is much much better now.

@castilrm: NPR just did a story on why kids vomit so often. The summary is really just that sometimes kid's will vomit in response to completely unrelated stimuli. If it's not happening on a regular basis, and the vomit doesn't look weird, I'd try not to be too concerned.

So about a month ago, my 3 year old threw up in the car after complaining about a stomachache. She hadn’t eaten much that morning (maybe some yogurt and fruit) and hadn’t pooped in a day or so, so I had assumed she was a little backed up and the discomfort caused her to throw up. She was completely fine after getting over her initial panic of throwing up and had no other symptoms pop up, so I didn’t give it much thought. Then, a couple days ago, it happened again after dinner. She mentioned her stomach hurt (it came on very suddenly as she had been eating normally moments prior) so I took her to the potty but she threw up instead. Again, after she got cleaned up and got over her initial nerves, she was fine.

I’ve left a message with the pediatrician to see if I should just continue to monitor or bring her in, but just curious if anyone has had this happen and what the outcome was? It doesn’t seem to be good related since nothing similar was consumed and she hadn’t eaten too quickly or been running around when it happened. Just a mention of a stomachache and then suddenly vomited.
